Chapter 76 - Claire’s Letter

I broke the brittle wax seal on the envelope with numb fingers. The scent of dried lavender and faint rosewater drifted up from the parchment, cutting through the damp chill of the cabin.

*January 14, 1985.*

*My darling Emma,*

*If you are reading this, it means Eleanor has failed to bury the past, and Julian Hoffman has finally caught the scent of the money. I pray to God you are old enough to understand why I had to abandon you.*

*Julian Hoffman was not Arthur’s banker. He was his blackmailer. In 1978, Arthur discovered that Hoffman’s Zurich bank was laundering political payoffs through upstate New York timber mills. When Arthur tried to expose them, Hoffman threatened to destroy everything—not just our money, but our lives. He swore he would take Eleanor’s child.*

*Eleanor couldn't have children. The rage and emptiness consumed her until she became as cruel as the men hunting us. When I became pregnant with you—not by Arthur, but by the man who tried to help me escape—Eleanor saw an opportunity. She promised to protect you from Hoffman if I surrendered the custody papers and signed the Swiss accounts over to a blind trust that only you could access upon adulthood.*

*I knew she hated me. I knew she was bitter. But I thought her pride as a Vance would keep you safe from Hoffman’s reach. I was wrong. The moment I signed the transfer in Zurich, Hoffman realized the money was locked until you reached maturity. He had me followed to the Mont Blanc Bridge.*

*I did not jump, Emma. They threw me.*

*I survived the fall into the freezing water, but I knew that if I returned, Hoffman would kill you to seize the estate under Swiss default laws. So I let them believe I was dead. I watched from the shadows as Eleanor took you back to Saratoga. I watched her turn you into her servant, chipping away at your spirit, punishing you for my sins.*

*The safe beneath this floor does not contain money. It contains Hoffman’s original laundering ledgers from 1978. It contains the federal evidence Arthur was too terrified to use.*

*Take it to the United States Attorney in Burlington. Do not negotiate. Do not barter with Eleanor or Hoffman. Break the chain.*

*Your loving mother,*

*Claire.*

I lowered the letter. Tears dripped steadily onto the ink, blurring the dated signature.

A crash shook the exterior wall of the cottage.

The front window shattered inward in an explosion of glass and frost. A tear gas canister hissed across the wooden floorboards, spitting thick, choking white smoke into the room.
