Chapter 101 - The Shadow on the Horizon

The clock struck twelve. Outside, car horns blared in the snow-muffled streets of Albany, and distant fireworks popped against the gray winter clouds. Emma pulled Lily and Claire into a tight, warm embrace, breathing in the undeniable reality that they had made it. The week of terror was over. The year 1978 was buried, and the clean slate of the new year had finally arrived.
Then, a low, electronic chime cut through the celebration.
It wasn't Emma's phone on the counter. It wasn't the television.
Claire froze in Emma’s arms. Her smile vanished instantly, replaced by a pale, rigid mask of sheer terror.
Slowly, Claire reached into the inner lining of her sheepskin coat, which hung on the back of the kitchen chair. She pulled out a slim, encrypted satellite transceiver—a device that had remained dormant through the entire ordeal at Vance Manor.
The blue screen was blinking violently with a high-priority alphanumeric code.
*INCOMING TRANSMISSION: ORIGIN GENEVA / CIPHER PROTOCOL OMEGA.*
"Claire?" Emma whispered, her heart seizing in her chest. "What is that?"
Claire’s hands were shaking so hard she nearly dropped the unit onto the linoleum floor. "This was the emergency channel... the one Dad set up with the Swiss trustees before he died. The one that was supposed to activate only if..."
She didn't finish the sentence. She pressed the receive button and lifted the receiver to her ear.
Emma watched her sister’s face turn the color of ash. Claire’s breath hitched, her pupils dilating until her eyes seemed completely black.
A sharp, metallic click echoed from the tiny speaker, followed by a voice that was smooth, cultured, and chillingly familiar—a voice that neither Emma nor Claire had heard in thirty-five years.
"Happy New Year, Claire," the voice whispered through the static. "I see Julian failed to clean up the mess. Tell your sister to pack Lily’s bags again. The real trust hasn't even been opened."
May you like
The line went dead.
Claire lowered the transceiver, staring at Emma with wide, horrified eyes, while outside, the sirens began to wail once more in the freezing midnight dark.
