Chapter 139 - The Matriarch’s Surrender

A sudden electronic chime echoed through the vast granite shed.

The satellite terminal on the crate lit up. A secure video connection was requesting access from an encrypted network originating in New York City.

Arthur looked at Emma. "It's her. She’s at the federal holding center in Plattsburgh. Her lawyers just negotiated an emergency five-minute legal consultation."

Emma stepped forward, her heart pounding against her ribs. She set Maya gently down on the passenger seat of the sled, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket. "Stay here for just a moment, sweetie. Mommy has to finish something."

Maya nodded bravely, clutching a small brass compass that Sterling had handed her to play with.

Emma walked to the terminal and tapped the screen.

The display flickered, resolving into a harsh, fluorescent-lit interview room. Eleanor Vance sat behind a stainless-steel table. The transformation was total and horrifying. Her platinum hair was disheveled, falling in graying strands across her forehead. The designer coat had been confiscated, replaced by a drab orange institutional jumpsuit. Her hands, unadorned by the diamonds she had flaunted for decades, were locked in chrome handcuffs chained to the center ring of the table.

When Eleanor saw Emma’s face appear on the screen, a dry sob ripped through her chest.

"Emma!" Eleanor gasped, leaning as far forward as the chain would permit. "Emma, thank God! The line is secure! You have to tell them! Tell these federal thugs that this is an internal family matter! They’ve seized the manor! They’re inventorying the safe in the study!"

Emma said nothing. She simply watched the woman who had spent twenty-five years making her feel small, worthless, and broken.

"Emma, please!" Eleanor’s voice devolved into an agonizing, desperate whine. "I’m your mother! I brought you into this world! I gave you everything! I took you into that house! I gave that child of yours a roof over her head on Christmas! You can't let them lock me away in this filthy cage! Tell Arthur to send the revocation code! I’ll give you the estate! I’ll give you the house in Kennebunkport! Just make them let me out!"

Emma leaned closer to the camera lens. Her voice was ice-cold, devoid of anger, devoid of hatred—filled only with the absolute, untouchable clarity of a mother who had saved her child.

"You called my daughter a burden, Eleanor," Emma said slowly, each word landing like a hammer on an anvil. "You told an innocent six-year-old girl that she wasn't worthy to sit at your table. You thought you could break her the way you broke me."

"I was angry! I was under stress!" Eleanor shrieked, tears cutting dark streaks through the smeared powder on her cheeks. "You know how the holidays are! I didn't mean it!"

"You meant every syllable," Emma said. "And for the first time in your life, you are going to pay the bill for what comes out of your mouth. Vance Manor doesn't belong to you. The trust doesn't belong to you. And neither do we."

"Emma! Don't you dare cut this line! Emma! EMMA!"

Emma reached out her finger and pressed the red disconnect icon. The screen went dead, plunging the granite shed back into the quiet amber glow of the kerosene lamp.
