Chapter 53 - The Shadows on the Ridge

On the snow-dusted crest of the hill overlooking the clearing, three unmarked black SUVs sat idling silently, their tinted windshields reflecting the pale morning light. They hadn't arrived with sirens; they hadn't triggered the proximity sensors Campbell had planted along the lower access road. They had been sitting there in silence, watching the entire skirmish unfold like spectators at an amphitheater.

"Who are they?" I whispered, pulling my jacket tight around myself, every maternal instinct screaming to dive into the cruiser and shield Lily with my own body.

"My extraction team," Arthur's voice answered calmly through the phone. "They have orders to ensure that neither you nor Lily are transported to Burlington under federal custody. Agent Campbell is a good man, Emma, but he is terribly naive. If you enter that federal processing facility, Eleanor’s contacts within the Department of Justice will file an emergency petition for temporary custody of Lily before the sun sets today. By midnight, my wife will have her hands on the girl."

Campbell keyed his radio mic with his thumb, speaking in rapid, hushed bursts to the backup cruisers. "All units, we have unidentified hostiles on the north ridge. Form a defensive perimeter around the primary transport. Do not engage unless fired upon."

"Do not bother, Agent Campbell," Arthur murmured. "Those men report directly to my personal trust in Geneva. They are not hostiles. They are your escort. Eleanor has just triggered a systemic freeze on all Vance domestic accounts. She has declared open war against you, Emma. She knows you found the 1978 ledger. She knows you have the names of the judges, the senators, the foreign ministers who built her throne."

"She called my daughter a burden," I said, tears of pure rage stinging my eyes. "She told a six-year-old child that she had no right to exist. And you let her do it. You stayed hidden in the dark while she tormented us!"

"I remained in Zurich because my survival was the only thing preventing her from having both of you erased permanently," Arthur replied, his voice dropping into a solemn, heavy cadence. "Eleanor is losing her mind, Emma. The narcissist's greatest fear is exposure, and you have exposed her to the core. She is erratic now. Dangerous in a way she has never been before. The New Year is coming in forty-eight hours. If you want to protect your daughter, you will bring that ring to the safe house at Lake Champlain."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, looking toward the cruiser where Lily was waving a small, gloved hand at me through the frost-rimmed window, unaware of the wolves circling the forest.

"Then Eleanor's private contractors will intercept you before you reach Burlington," Arthur said. "And I will not be able to stop them. The choice is yours, my brave little girl. You walked away from her dinner. Now you must decide whose table you will sit at."

The line went dead. The satellite phone emitted a sharp, high-pitched tone before its internal circuitry burned out with a faint wisp of gray smoke, frying the hardware into useless slag.

Campbell lowered his weapon, his breath pluming in the icy air. "We can't take the highway to Burlington, Emma. If what he said about the DOJ injunction is true, Eleanor has already filed the paperwork. She owns three district judges in the second circuit."

"Then where do we go?" I asked, feeling the crushing weight of the world closing in on my shoulders.

Campbell looked from the charred porch of our cabin to the silent black vehicles lingering on the ridge. "We go off the grid. Completely. We take the back roads toward the lake."
