Chapter 115 - The Cold Hand of Custody

Two hours later, the helicopter touched down at a fortified airfield outside Quebec City. Emma, Claire, and the child were escorted into a subterranean government facility designed for high-profile international asset protection. Here, the air was warm, the lighting was steady, and for the first time in a week, there were no frozen car windows or shadows lurking in the pines.

Down the long corridor, behind thick bulletproof glass, Julian Vance sat under armed guard at a metal consultation table. He looked gaunt and exhausted, his wrists bearing faint red marks from Victor’s hired thugs who had held him hostage for days. But when he saw Emma through the observation window, he straightened up, a look of profound relief washing over his bruised face.

Sterling motioned to the door. "Five minutes, Emma. He is officially cooperating with the Department of Justice, but he requested to speak with you before his transfer to federal witness protection."

Emma entered the small room alone, leaving Claire to watch her daughter in the adjacent lounge. Julian looked up, his eyes rimmed with red.

"Emma," he breathed, his voice cracking. "Thank God. Thank God you got her out."

"You sent the recording to Zurich," Emma said, standing across from him with her arms folded. "Why, Julian? You spent years standing by while Eleanor treated me like trash. You sat at that table and watched Mother tear me down piece by piece."

Julian dropped his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "Because I was a coward, Em. I took Mother’s money, I let her buy my silence, and I let Victor whisper his poison into my ear because I thought if I stayed on their good side, I’d survive. But on Christmas night... when Mother looked at that innocent little girl and said she was an embarrassment, a parasite on the family name... I saw myself twenty years ago. And I saw you."

He looked up, tears cutting through the grime on his cheeks. "I knew that if I didn't stop them, Victor would take that girl and mold her into another cold-blooded sociopath, just like he did to Eleanor. I couldn't let him do it. I took the beating from Victor’s men because for once in my miserable life, I wanted to do something that wasn't selfish."

Emma looked at her brother. The anger that had burned inside her for years did not vanish completely, but it cooled into a quiet, solemn understanding.

"I won't lie to you, Julian," Emma said quietly. "I don't know if I can ever fully forgive you for the years you stood by. But tonight, you helped save my daughter’s life. That buys you peace. That buys you a chance to rebuild yourself somewhere far away from the Vance name."

May you like

Julian nodded slowly, wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his rough prisoner's sweater. "That’s all I ever wanted, Em. Just a chance to be clean."
