Chapter 144 - The Broken Key

Emma’s breath hitched. She reached into her wool coat and pulled out the brass key Arthur had given her at the boathouse—the antique, heavy key that supposedly opened the safety deposit box in Zurich where her father had hidden the trust for her and Maya.

"You told me this was mechanical," Emma whispered, her heart hammering violently. "You said it was forged in 1978."

"The exterior is antique brass," Arthur said, taking the key from her hand and flicking on a low-lumen red penlight. He held the key close to his eye, examining the intricate notches along the shaft. "My god. Eleanor didn't just store it. She had it modified."

He pressed the tip of his pocketknife against the circular head of the key. With a faint click, the decorative faceplate popped loose, revealing a hairline-thin micro-circuit board embedded in black epoxy, flanked by a lithium-cell transponder no larger than a grain of rice. A microscopic diode was flashing in rhythm with the dull thrumming overhead.

"She kept tabs on it," Emma breathed, revulsion curdling in her stomach. "Even when she thought she had lost, she left a trail."

"She didn't leave it for herself," Arthur said coldly. "Eleanor knew she was going to prison. She left the breadcrumbs for Sterling. She traded our location to him in exchange for her own protection—or perhaps a private extradition."

Without hesitating, Emma grabbed the key from Arthur’s hand, placed it on the steel floorboard beneath the passenger seat, and brought the heel of her winter boot down with all her weight.

The delicate micro-circuit shattered with a crunch of silicon and plastic. The tiny diode flickered once, flared hot, and died.

Above them, the sound of the helicopter altered pitch. The pilot had lost the pinpoint signal, but the search was already narrowed to a two-mile grid. A blinding searchlight cut through the fog, sweeping across the tops of the skeletal trees five hundred yards away.

"Wake Maya," Arthur said, shifting the car into gear. "We have less than three minutes before they deploy ground teams."
