Chapter 124 - The Subterranean Artery

The tunnel sloped sharply downward, the century-old brickwork giving way to jagged, blasted limestone. Water dripped from the ceiling in rhythmic, hollow drops, pooling on the gravel floor around their boots. Sterling kept Maya covered beneath his coat, his heavy footsteps steady despite the rough ground.

"Maya, are you warm?" Emma whispered, reaching out to stroke her daughter's cold cheek as they jogged.

"I have my mittens, Mommy," Maya whispered back, her voice remarkably steady despite the damp chill. "And I have the key."

Emma stopped dead in her tracks. "What key?"

Sterling and Claire halted, spinning around with weapons raised to cover the rear tunnel.

Maya reached into the inner pocket of her tiny snow jacket and pulled out a small, heavy object wrapped in oilskin cloth. It was the antique brass key with the three interlocking rings—the one Emma had found in the floorboards of the Albany vault weeks ago.

"You told me to keep it in my pocket no matter what," Maya said softly, looking up with solemn eyes. "Before the lights went out, Grandma’s man on the phone told me to throw it out the window. He said if I dropped it, Grandma would give me all the toys I left behind in the nursery. But I didn't. Because Grandma lied on Christmas. She called me a burden, and burdens don't get toys."

Emma felt a lump rise in her throat, so thick it felt like swallowing glass. She dropped to her knees, oblivious to the wet gravel, and wrapped her arms around her daughter, burying her face in Maya’s woolen hat.

"You are never a burden, Maya," Emma said, tears finally breaking past her exhaustion. "You are my whole world. You are everything good that ever came out of that rotten family. Do you hear me? Everything."

"I hear you, Mommy," Maya whispered, patting Emma’s back with her padded mitten. "Now we have to run. The monsters are coming."

"She’s right," Claire warned, tapping her earpiece. "The acoustic sensors Sterling placed in the shaft just registered cutting torches. Vogel’s breachers have thermite. They’ll be down the ladder in sixty seconds."

Sterling pointed his flashlight toward a dark opening fifty yards ahead, where the rusted rails of an abandoned mining cart vanished into a larger cavern. "That's the storm overflow for the Saint Lawrence drainage basin. It empties out near the old shipping docks on the riverfront. If we can reach the frozen slips, I have a contact at the grain silos with an amphibious airboat."

"Can an airboat cross the river ice in this weather?" Emma asked, scrambling back to her feet and taking Maya from Sterling’s arms. Maya was six, but she felt light as a feather fueled by pure maternal adrenaline.

"It can if the river isn't fully frozen," Sterling grunted, chambering a round into his carbine. "If the ice is solid, we run. If it breaks, we swim. Either way, we don't let Vogel pin us against the mountain."

They sprinted forward into the larger conduit. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the dripping limestone, but beneath that sound, Emma could hear something far more chilling: the distant, high-pitched whine of an electric scooter or a motorized cart entering the upper tunnel behind them.

Vogel wasn't chasing them on foot. He had deployed tactical all-terrain reconnaissance bikes through the utility entry.

"Take the branch line to the left!" Claire shouted, breaking off to the right to plant an anti-pursuit charge against an iron support beam. "Emma, keep Maya moving! Don't look back!"

Emma ran. The pain in her ankle flared with every stride, but she locked her teeth and focused entirely on the rhythmic breathing of her child against her collarbone. The air smelled stronger now—salt, frozen mud, and the sharp, freezing wind of the open Saint Lawrence River blowing back through the ventilation grates.

Behind them, a violent roar shook the tunnel. Claire’s charge had detonated, followed by the screech of collapsing masonry and the frantic screams of Vogel’s lead scouts caught in the blast.
