Chapter 100 - The Countdown to Zero

At eleven o'clock on New Year’s Eve, the small kitchen in Emma’s Albany home was filled with the smell of roasted chicken, cinnamon, and fresh-baked bread.
The presents that had been packed into the trunk of the car on Christmas night—the ones Emma had snatched from Eleanor’s glittering, sterile tree after the matriarch had called Lily an intolerable burden—now lay scattered in cheerful chaos across the living room carpet. Lily was sitting cross-legged on the floor, happily assembling a wooden dollhouse with Claire, their laughter drifting into the kitchen like music.
Emma leaned against the counter, holding a steaming mug of tea. The television in the corner was muted, showing the gathering crowds in Times Square braving the freezing rain beneath the neon lights.
The phone on the counter stayed silent. There were no more threats, no more frantic voice messages from Eleanor begging for a pardon, no more cryptic instructions from Julian’s offshore couriers. Julian was locked in a federal holding cell in northern New York, facing forty years without parole. Eleanor was under psychiatric evaluation in a secure facility in Westchester, stripped of her accounts, her dignity, and her audience.
At eleven fifty-five, Lily ran into the kitchen, holding up a small painted figure from her dollhouse.
"Mommy! Look, Aunt Claire helped me put the chimney on!"
Emma knelt down, kissing Lily’s forehead. "It’s beautiful, sweetheart. Just like our house."
"And nobody is going to tell us to leave?" Lily asked, her voice small, a lingering echo of the trauma from Christmas dinner.
Emma cupped Lily's face in both hands, looking straight into her clear, beautiful eyes. "Nobody, Lily. Ever again. You are not a burden. You are my whole heart."
The clock on the wall ticked toward midnight. Claire walked into the kitchen, holding three glasses of apple cider. She handed one to Emma and one to Lily, raising her own with a quiet, triumphant smile.
"To the end of the Vances," Claire toasted softly. "And the beginning of us."
May you like
"To us," Emma said.
Lily clinked her glass against theirs, giggling. On the screen, the crystal ball began its descent into a blizzard of confetti.
