Chapter 150 - The Crossing at Mile Marker 28

Gunfire erupted from the tree line, tearing through the snowbanks around them. High-caliber rounds cracked past their ears, snapping the branches of the birch trees overhead.
Arthur returned fire, moving backward to shield Emma and Maya with his own body. "Run, Emma! The crossing! Run!"
Emma didn't look back. She lowered her head and drove forward through the drifts, her legs pumping on raw instinct. Maya was clinging to her coat with frantic strength, burying her face into Emma's chest.
Behind them, a scream cut through the gunfire—the unmistakable sound of a man going down.
Emma stopped, skidding in the snow, turning back through the blinding whiteout.
Arthur was on one knee twenty yards behind her, clutching his right shoulder. Blood was spreading across his dark wool coat, black in the moonlight. Two dark figures in tactical winter camouflage were closing in on him through the trees, their weapons raised.
Arthur looked up through the swirling snow, meeting Emma's eyes. He didn't ask for help. He didn't cry out. He simply pointed his weapon with his left hand, fired his remaining rounds to force the shooters into cover, and screamed at the top of his lungs:
"SAVE THE CHILD, EMMA! BREAK THE LINE!"
Emma’s heart tore in two. But she knew that if she went back, Maya was lost. The burden wasn't the child—the burden was the generations of fear, cowardice, and submission that had kept the Vance family in chains.
Emma turned her back on the gunfire and sprinted toward the railway crossing.
She hit the rusted wooden ties, vaulting over the rails and plunging down the opposite slope. There, hidden beneath a snowdrift behind an old cedar fence, was the battered green Ford pickup Julian had promised.
Emma tore open the driver's door, threw Maya onto the bench seat, and dropped to her knees in the freezing slush beneath the front bumper. Her fingers were numb, bleeding from the rough metal as she groped blindly along the inside of the frame rail.

There. A block of electrical tape.
She ripped it away with her teeth, catching the cold metal key in her hand.
