Chapter 112 - The Descending Wrath

The blinding halogen cones of the three gunships sliced through the swirling snow, pinning Victor Vance and his private security team in harsh, unforgiving white light. The hurricane of downwash whipped the frozen slush into a violent mist, snapping the steel safety cables on the mobile staircase and forcing the pilot of Victor’s idling private jet to throttle back to prevent turbine stall.

Victor stood frozen three steps from the aircraft hatch, the silver wolf’s-head cane trembling in his gloved grip. For decades, he had operated as the untouchable architect of the Vance dynasty, moving judges, politicians, and Swiss ledgers like pawns on an ivory board. Now, his immaculate charcoal coat was caked in ice, and the predatory smirk had vanished completely from his pale, aristocratic face.

"Step away from the stairs, Victor!" the megaphone roared again, cutting over the thunderous drone of twin turbines.

From the undercarriage of the lead aircraft, heavy tactical operators roped down onto the slick tarmac. They moved in precise, lethal formation, clad in unmarked matte-black winter gear, carbines trained squarely on Victor’s hired mercenaries. Victor’s guards, who only moments earlier had been eager to murder a woman and a six-year-old child for a multimillion-dollar payout, took one look at the laser dots blooming across their chests and dropped their weapons onto the concrete with sickening clatters.

Emma pulled her daughter tighter against her chest, shielding the little girl’s face beneath the heavy wool of her winter coat. Claire stepped forward, her hand still resting on the small-caliber pistol concealed within her parka, her sharp eyes scanning the advancing strike team.

"Stay behind me, Em," Claire murmured, her voice steady despite the bone-chilling cold. "We don't know whose payroll these birds are on."

A tall figure stepped out of the shadow of the lead helicopter’s landing skid. He wore no helmet, only a heavy dark tactical jacket and the distinctive gold-rimmed wire spectacles of a Zurich court magistrate. It was Charles Sterling—the senior executor of the Swiss Bloodline Trust, a man presumed to have been silenced by Victor’s operatives in a simulated car crash outside Bern five months ago.

Beside Sterling walked two armed Canadian federal agents bearing international extradition warrants.

"The escrow was registered under the primary lineage protocol at zero-six-hundred this morning," Sterling called out, his Swiss-accented voice ringing clear through the biting wind. "The child’s digital signature was authenticated through the historical ledger your late brother hid beneath the floorboards of the Vance estate. You have no legal standing, Victor. You have no claim. And under Section Twelve of the Geneva Accords on Financial Fraud, you are formally under arrest."

Victor’s eyes widened with manic fury. "That vault belongs to the Vance patriarch! I built this empire while my brother rotted in Albany! You cannot disinherit me with a dead man's scrap of paper!"

May you like

"It was never your empire to inherit," Sterling answered flatly. "You were merely the caretaker who forgot his place."
