Chapter 66 - The Ledger of Blood and Paper

Inside the lockbox lay several thick manila folders bound with red twine. I stepped forward, pulling Lily close with one arm while flipping open the top dossier with the other.

The document was dated six years ago—two weeks after Lily’s birth. At the top, in crisp legal typography, was the heading: *GUARANTY OF UNCONDITIONAL INDEMNITY AND SURETY.*

My eyes scanned the lines, my heart pounding like a war drum in my ears. Arthur Vance had pledged every asset, trust, and future inheritance belonging to "the issue of Emma Vance" as collateral for a ninety-million-dollar credit facility issued by the Saint-Laurent Syndicate of Montreal. Attached to the back was a forged signature—my signature—and a certified copy of Lily’s birth certificate with an infant footprint inked in black.

"He sold her," I whispered, the paper trembling in my hands. "Before she could even walk, he sold her life to cover his shipping debts."

Eleanor hung her head, weeping silently into her hands. "Arthur was drowning, Emma. The shipping routes in Rotterdam collapsed during the financial crash. He was desperate. He told me it was just a formality, that he would buy it back before she ever turned seven."

"And you let him," I snarled, stepping toward her, the rage boiling up inside me so fiercely I felt dizzy. "You watched me struggle as a single mother. You watched me work two jobs to pay for her preschool. You invited us to Christmas dinner, let Julian laugh at her ragged shoes, called her a burden to her face, knowing that your luxury was bought with her stolen future!"

"I hated him for it!" Eleanor cried out, falling to her knees on the cold concrete floor. "I hated Arthur every single day! But I was trapped! If I spoke, he threatened to send the Montreal collectors to your apartment! I was trying to keep you away from us, Emma! I wanted you to hate me so you would never come near that house again!"

"Mommy?" Lily whispered, her small voice cutting through the suffocating rage in the room. She was looking at the metal door behind us.

The red light on the electronic lock had just switched to flashing amber.
