Chapter 181 - The Midnight Bell of New Year's Eve

Across the valley, the first distant chime of the Lake Placid church bells began to toll, marking fifteen minutes until the arrival of New Year’s Day. The deep, mournful bronze resonance rolled over the frozen lake, cutting through the crackle of the burning mill.
Thomas Vance stepped forward, his leather-gloved hand outstretched, the barrel of his pistol lowering by an inch. "A sensible choice, Emma. The Vance women always understand preservation in the end."
Eleanor, watching from the snow, suddenly let out a piercing shriek. "Emma! The bottom cap! He doesn't know about the bottom cap!"
Thomas’s eyes flashed with sudden fury. He pivoted, aiming his weapon toward Eleanor’s head. "Shut your mouth, you pathetic—"
He never finished the sentence.
From the dark tree line behind the iron spire, a single, deafening gunshot tore through the Adirondack air.
Thomas staggered forward, a look of profound shock freezing his aristocratic features as a blossom of dark crimson erupted through the shoulder of his charcoal coat. The pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the ice.
From the brush stepped Julian, his face blackened with soot, his hair singed, his tactical vest scorched, but his service weapon held steady in both hands.
"Move, Emma!" Julian roared.
Emma didn't hesitate. She threw herself sideways into the deep snow of the embankment, shielding Maya with her entire body as Thomas’s private security detail opened fire from the lake ice. Bullets snapped through the pine branches above them, cutting down swathes of frozen needles in a deafening hail of lead.
Thomas, clutching his bleeding shoulder, dropped to one knee, his eyes blazing with feral, unhinged malice. "Kill them!" he screamed to his men, his cultured Bostonian veneer completely shattering into savagery. "Take the child! Sift the snow! Kill them all!"
Eleanor Vance, throwing her entire weight forward from her knees, slammed her body into Thomas’s legs, knocking the wounded patriarch flat onto the ice just as he reached for his fallen weapon.
"Run, Emma!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing across the lake with a mother's desperate, terrifying fury. "Run with my grandchild! RUN!"
Thomas struck Eleanor with his fist, but the matriarch held on with rabid, dying strength, her fingers clawing into the beaver-fur collar of his coat, pinning him beneath her weight on the slick ice.
Emma scrambled up the steep embankment through the dense snowdrifts, Maya weeping against her neck, Julian covering their rear with measured, desperate single shots that echoed against the granite bluff.
They broke through the tree line onto the shoulder of Highway 86 just as the headlights of a heavy black vehicle crested the rise, its high beams cutting through the blizzard directly toward them.
Emma threw herself in front of Maya, Julian raising his empty pistol toward the blinding light.
The vehicle skidded to a violent halt on the black ice, its passenger door kicking open into the howling storm.
A man in the dark uniform of an official agency leaned out, his voice cutting through the siren that now began to wail down the mountain pass:
"Emma Vance! Get in! We have five minutes before the Swiss protocol seals the border!"

Emma looked down at the titanium cylinder still clutched in her bleeding hand, then looked back down toward the frozen lake where a second massive explosion tore through the ice near the iron spire, lighting the midnight sky in a horrifying column of fire.
"Mommy..." Maya whispered, pointing a shaking mitten toward the burning lake below. "Where is Grandma?"
