Chapter 51 - The Ringing in the Ash

The first pale rays of the New Year's dawn broke over the snow-covered Vermont forest, painting the smoldering ruins of the farmhouse in faint hues of rose and gold.

Firefighters were rolling up their hoses, the thick black smoke finally giving way to thin, drifting plumes of white vapor. The world felt eerily still, the howling blizzard having spent its fury during the night, leaving behind an ocean of pristine, untouched snow that covered the scars of the battlefield.

A state police cruiser was waiting to transport Lily and me to a secure medical facility in Burlington for observation. A female officer stood by the open passenger door, holding a warm fleece blanket and a steaming cup of hot chocolate for Lily.

"Go with Officer Davis, sweetie," I told Lily gently, kissing both of her cold cheeks. "Mommy will be right there in two minutes. I just need to help Agent Campbell."

Lily looked at me with those deep, ancient eyes that belonged to my father, but held none of his cruelty. "Promise?"

"I promise, my heart. Cross my heart."

Lily smiled faintly and took the officer's hand, climbing into the warm back seat of the cruiser.

I stood beside Campbell near the charred edge of the porch, looking down at the fireproof box in the snow. Beside it lay Caleb’s personal effects, recovered from his coat before he was hauled away: an encrypted satellite phone, a set of titanium keys, and a solitary black velvet box.

"We have to go, Emma," Campbell said softly, checking his watch. "The federal transport to Burlington is leaving."

I reached down and picked up the black velvet box. Inside lay an antique gold signet ring bearing the Vance family crest—a rearing stag surrounded by three silver stars. It was Arthur’s ring. The ring he had worn on his pinky finger every day of my life, the ring that was supposed to have been cremated with him five years ago.

A strange, prickling sensation crawled up the back of my neck.

"Campbell," I whispered, holding the ring up into the pale morning light. "Arthur was cremated in Zurich. I attended the memorial. I saw the urn."

Campbell froze, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the gold ring. "Eleanor handled the arrangements personally."

Before either of us could say another word, the encrypted satellite phone resting in the snow began to vibrate.

*Bzzzt. Bzzzt. Bzzzt.*

The screen illuminated beneath the morning mist.

There was no caller ID. There was only a single, glowing line of text displayed across the military-grade display:

**CALLER: ARTHUR VANCE (TERMINAL 01 - ZURICH)**

My breath caught in my throat. My blood turned to liquid nitrogen.

Campbell drew his weapon, staring at the vibrating phone as if it were a live grenade. "Emma... don't touch that."

The phone vibrated again.

*Bzzzt. Bzzzt.*

Then, the speaker clicked open automatically without anyone pressing a button.

From the tiny speaker, cutting through the freezing dawn air of Vermont, came the familiar, terrifyingly calm voice of my dead father:

*"Happy New Year, Emma. I see you've finally cleared the board. It's time for us to have that dinner you walked out on."*
