Chapter 29 - The Wolves Turn

"You lying bitch," Julian’s voice came back over the phone, no longer directed at me, but hissed at the world around him. He didn't even hang up.
Through the glass windows of the hangar, the entire scene unfolded like a slow-motion catastrophe.
Julian burst out of the passenger side of the SUV, shoving Sheriff Barnes aside with such violence that the older man stumbled against the snow-slicked bumper. Julian stormed through the double glass doors of the private terminal, taking the stairs to the VIP lounge three at a time.
"Campbell, now," I whispered.
"All units, move in! Secure the perimeter, do not let that aircraft taxi!" Campbell barked into his radio.
Down on the airfield, four black tactical vans surged out from behind the maintenance sheds, blue and red emergency strobes cutting through the predawn fog. Sirens wailed, bouncing off the steel walls of the hangars.
Up in the VIP lounge, Eleanor turned around just as Julian kicked the door open.
Even without audio, the pantomime of betrayal was horrific to watch. Julian threw the flight manifest in Eleanor’s face, paper fluttering through the air like confetti. Eleanor backed away, her crystal glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the polished stone floor. She raised her hands, trying to placate him, her mouth opening in frantic excuses, but Julian wasn't listening.
He lunged forward, grabbing Eleanor by the lapels of her expensive coat, shaking her violently.
"Federal agents! Drop to the floor! Hands where we can see them!"
Tactical officers in full body armor swarmed the lounge doors, assault rifles raised. Julian froze, his hands still knotted in Eleanor’s collar. Eleanor dropped to her knees, screaming, curling into a ball as red laser sights painted her designer sweater.
Down on the tarmac, Sheriff Barnes reached for his service weapon, but three federal cruisers boxed him in completely, officers pinning him facedown onto the frozen asphalt before his holster could even unsnap.
It was over in less than ninety seconds.

The great Vance conspiracy—forty years in the making, built on cruelty, cold manipulation, and the deliberate emotional torture of an innocent child—had collapsed under the weight of its own greed.
Campbell looked over at me, a mixture of awe and relief in his tired eyes. "Let's go, Emma. Time to face your mother."
