Chapter 108 - The Shadow at the Window

Before Claire could argue, a sharp, metallic *snap* sounded from the treeline behind the cabin.
Claire’s hand flashed to her weapon, immediately cutting the power to the Toughbook. The cabin plunged into pre-dawn shadows, the only illumination being the faint gray light seeping through the frost-rimed windows.
"Thermal imaging," Claire breathed, dropping low against the floorboards. "They found the satellite link footprint."
Emma didn't panic. She scooped Lily off the bed in a single, fluid motion, pressing the child into the wood-storage recess behind the massive brick hearth. "Stay down, Lily. Like the game. Do not make a sound."
"Mommy," Lily whispered, her eyes wide in the dark.
"I love you more than the whole world," Emma said softly, kissing her cheek. "I’ll be right here."
A concussive flash-bang exploded on the front porch, shattering the triple-pane glass and showering the living area with needle-sharp shards of ice and wood. Through the blown doorway came two figures in matte-black winter gear, suppressed submachine guns raised in high-ready positions.
They moved with machine-like speed, sweeping the corners. But they were expecting two terrified women and a crying child.
They weren't expecting Claire Vance, who had lived three years as an underground ghost.
Claire fired three times from beneath the heavy cedar dining table. The first operative took two rounds to the center chest plate, the kinetic impact throwing him backward off the porch. The second operative pivoted instantly, his weapon spitting a line of suppressed fire that chewed the heavy table legs into flying splinters.
Emma didn't wait. Lunging from the shadow of the brick hearth, she swung a heavy, two-foot cast-iron fireplace poker with every ounce of momentum in her body. The heavy iron struck the second operative directly across the side of his tactical helmet, fracturing the composite shell and snapping his head sideways. He stumbled, dazed, and Claire put a finishing round through his thigh, pinning him to the floorboards.
A third operative stepped through the shattered doorway, rifle leveled directly at Claire’s head.
"Freeze!" he barked in French-accented English. "Drop the weapon or—"
Emma threw the iron poker with pinpoint, desperate accuracy. It struck the man’s rifle barrel, throwing his aim off as his burst shredded the ceiling beams. Claire rolled, brought her weapon up, and fired twice.

The operative collapsed onto the snow-covered porch threshold, motionless.
Silence crashed back over the cabin, broken only by the whistling winter wind and the ragged breathing of the two sisters.
