Chapter 27 - The Web Dissolves

Inside the back booth of the neon-lit diner, away from the windows, Campbell plugged my father’s USB drive into his rugged police laptop. The diner was empty except for a lone short-order cook dozing behind the griddle.
The screen glowed with hundreds of digitized files: offshore shell registrations, wire transfers, audio recordings of Eleanor and Julian in 1981 discussing how to stage a boating accident for Arthur, and stamped federal affidavits.
"Arthur Vance was a genius," Campbell muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "He didn't just document their embezzlement. He structured the Halifax trust so that the moment anyone attempted an unauthorized transfer from an overseas IP address without your biometric signature, it would automatically flag the Department of Justice's international anti-money laundering division."
"Julian told me that my New Year’s surrender papers would unlock the funds," I said, sipping bitter black coffee that did nothing to warm the chill in my blood.
"They would have—if Barnes had filed them through legitimate probate channels," Campbell explained, pointing at a line of code on the screen. "Julian doesn't know that Arthur set a poison pill. If Julian logs into the Halifax portal using the forged proxy papers Barnes gave him, he won't get six million dollars. He’ll trigger an immediate, automated Interpol freeze on every asset Eleanor owns."
A sudden realization struck me like a physical blow. "Julian doesn't know."
"Know what?" Campbell asked, looking up.
"Julian thinks Eleanor is meeting him in Geneva to split the money," I said, pulling Eleanor’s handwritten letter out of my coat and sliding it across the Formica table. "Read the last line."
Campbell scanned the frantic cursive. His eyebrows slowly furrowed.
*'Split the six million fifty-fifty... meet you in Geneva.'*
"Now look at this," Campbell said, opening a file he had pulled from the state database an hour ago. He spun the laptop toward me. "This is Eleanor’s private charter flight manifest out of Hanscom Airfield for 6:00 AM. Look at the destination, Emma."
I leaned in, my heart thumping against my ribs.
*Destination: San José, Costa Rica.*
*Passengers: 1. Eleanor Vance.*
*Extradition Treaty: Non-applicable for financial charges under special corporate status.*
"Eleanor isn't going to Geneva," I whispered, the absurdity and horror of it washing over me. "She's not splitting the money with Julian. She's running to Central America alone."
Campbell closed the laptop with a sharp snap. "Eleanor used Julian to force your signature, just like she used Lily to break you. She was never planning on meeting him in Zurich. The moment Julian triggers that offshore portal, Eleanor’s private account in San José is set to sweep the entire balance, leaving Julian holding the criminal liability in Massachusetts while Barnes takes the fall."

A bitter, cold laugh escaped my throat. Forty years of calculated malice, of tearing our family apart, of calling my innocent daughter an unwanted burden at a Christmas dinner table—and the two predators were already devouring each other alive.
"So," I said, leaning across the table, my eyes locking onto Campbell’s. "Let’s make sure Julian finds out."
