Chapter 84 - The Ring of the Ghost

The silence on the line was not empty; it crackled with the heavy, trembling breath of a woman who had run out of walls to hide behind.

"Emma?"

The voice was unrecognizable. It wasn't the imperious, icy tone that had cut me down over roast beef seven days ago. It wasn't the polished matriarch who commanded boardrooms and sneered at my child’s secondhand shoes. It was hollowed-out, brittle, and drenched in a terrifying hysteria.

"I’m here, Eleanor," I said, my tone flat, stripped of every ounce of the deference I had offered her for twenty-five years.

A ragged gasp broke through the receiver. "Is... is she with you? Did that monster hurt her?"

"Lily is safe. No thanks to you."

"You don't understand, Emma, you never understood!" Eleanor’s voice spiked into that familiar, suffocating panic, though the authority was entirely gone. "Julian came to the house two hours ago. Not Hoffman—Julian! My brother! He tore through the study. He took the deeds, the Swiss certificates, the original wills! He told me Hoffman had you on the lake! He said if the ledger fell into the authorities' hands, we were all going to federal prison!"

"You belong in prison," I replied coldly. "You brought Hoffman into my daughter’s life. You called her a burden in front of twelve people on Christmas night."

"I had to!" she sobbed, and for the first time in my life, I heard Eleanor Vance openly weep. "I had to make him think you were worthless to me! Hoffman was watching the house from the tree line that entire week! He told Julian that if the Vance lineage had an heir—a clean, legal heir who could claim the foundation trusts—he would take her to leverage the board in Geneva!"

"You're lying to save yourself."

"I am not lying!" she screamed, the sound distorting the microphone. "I called her a burden because I wanted him to think she was garbage! I wanted him to leave you alone! I thought if you took her and ran, if you hated me enough to disappear, you would be outside the blast radius when the audit hit! But Julian... Julian sold the coordinates to Hoffman the moment you left Saratoga!"

I gripped the plastic receiver so hard my knuckles burned white. "And Claire? Did you protect Claire by telling the world she jumped off a bridge?"

The other end of the line went completely, terrifyingly silent. The sound of Eleanor’s ragged breathing froze.

"How... how do you know about Claire?" she whispered, her voice reduced to a dry rasp.

"I have her Canadian papers in front of me, Mother. Right now. At the border station."

"Emma... listen to me very carefully," Eleanor said, and the sudden shift in her tone was chillingly sober. "If you have Claire’s papers, you have the address of the safety box. Do not let the police open it. Do not let Julian find it. Because Claire didn't run away from our father. She ran away from *Julian*."
