Chapter 177 - Eleanor's Broken Line

"Mother?" Emma whispered toward the tablet, taking a hesitant step forward onto the creaking pine floorboards.

"Emma... thank God," Eleanor Vance wept. It was not the crisp, imperious voice that had ruled family holidays with an iron fist. It was the sound of a woman stripped of every layer of vanity, prestige, and power. Her breathing was wet, broken by ragged sobs. "Emma, listen to me... you have to listen to me..."

"Where are you?" Emma demanded, her jaw clenching. "Did Thomas lock you in the cellar like he threatened?"

"No... I’m in the carriage house office," Eleanor gasped. "I had a spare key hidden in the antique grandfather clock. Emma... he’s going to kill all of us. You don't understand what he is. You never understood."

"I understand that you sold my daughter out!" Emma’s voice cracked with fury, the echoes bouncing off the high stone walls of the mill. "You brought Maya into that cellar last summer! You let him scan her biometrics! And on Christmas night, you called her a burden! You humiliated her in front of everyone just to set this nightmare in motion!"

"I had to!" Eleanor shrieked into the phone, the sound dissolving into a desperate coughing fit. "Emma, you fool! You think I didn't know Thomas was watching the house? His operatives have had listening devices in the dining room molding for five years! If I had shown Maya an ounce of love—if I had acknowledged that she was the heir—Thomas would have taken her that very night!"

Emma stopped, her hand frozen in mid-air. "What are you talking about?"

"The directive..." Eleanor sobbed, her voice dropping into a ragged whisper. "Your father made me swear. In 1978, when your father realized what Thomas was doing, he signed an amendment. If the direct heir was perceived by the family to be loved, protected, and fully integrated into the estate, Thomas was authorized under the trust covenant to take legal guardianship immediately upon the matriarch’s incapacity. The only way to prevent him from claiming legal conservatorship over Maya was if she was documented in family records as estranged... rejected... an outcast."

Emma stared at the glowing tablet, her mind reeling in revulsion and disbelief. "You called my six-year-old child a burden to save her?"

"I wanted you to run!" Eleanor cried, her tears audible through the speaker. "I knew your pride, Emma! I spent twenty-five years tearing you down because I knew that if I insulted that child, you would pack your bags, take your presents, and walk out of that house and never look back! I thought you would take the interstate to Chicago! I thought you would disappear before the New Year deadline!"

Julian looked up at Emma, his brow furrowed with deep skepticism. "Emma, don't buy this. She’s a master manipulator. She’s trying to buy herself an escape route."

"I am not lying!" Eleanor screamed from the other end of the line, the sound of breaking glass audible in the background. "They've breached the carriage house doors! Emma, Thomas has an order signed by a federal magistrate in Syracuse! It names him as Maya's legal custodian based on my declaration of mental incompetence! If he catches you on the ice, he won't take her to court—he has a private Gulfstream waiting on the private runway at Lake Clear! He will take her to Switzerland, and you will never see her again!"

A loud crash echoed through the tablet’s speaker, followed by the sound of heavy boots and a sudden, sharp cry of pain from Eleanor.

"Eleanor!" Emma shouted.

"Emma... forgive me..." Eleanor's voice was muffled, as if the phone were being dragged across the floor. "The second key... it's not in the safe... it's inside the teddy bear your father gave you in 1985... the one Maya is holding..."

The call cut out with a burst of static, leaving the mill in suffocating silence.
