Chapter 113 - The Shattered Command

The descent of Victor Vance from the boarding stairs was neither dignified nor graceful. Two federal agents ascended the ice-slicked aluminum steps, caught him by the elbows, and stripped the heavy walking stick from his hands. When one of the officers twisted his arms behind his back to snap heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, Victor let out a shrill, guttural cry that sounded less like a powerful financier and more like a wounded animal backed into a corner.

"Emma!" Victor shrieked, his voice cracking against the roar of the wind as he was dragged down onto the slush. "Do you think this changes anything? Do you think you walk away with the money and your little bastard lives in peace? The syndicate in Zurich will pick your bones clean! You will sleep with one eye open for the rest of your pathetic life!"

Emma did not flinch. She stood her ground, her boots firmly planted on the freezing pavement. Her six-year-old daughter, who had once been called "a burden" by her own grandmother at a holiday table, peeked out from Emma’s coat. The little girl did not cry. She looked at the frantic old man with wide, calm eyes, seeing him for what he truly was: a hollow shadow, stripped of his golden walls and expensive legal shields.

"My daughter has a name, Victor," Emma said, her voice quiet, steady, and cut through with iron. "And she will never hear yours again."

Claire walked up to Victor as he was forced to his knees in the snow. She bent down slightly, looking him dead in the eyes. "You spent forty years turning our family into a slaughterhouse, Uncle Victor. You turned Eleanor into a monster, you destroyed Julian, and you thought you could do the same to the next generation. But you underestimated one simple thing."

"What?" Victor spat, blood and spittle flying from his lips.

"We don't need your approval to exist," Claire whispered.

The agents hauled Victor to his feet and marched him toward the secondary helicopter. His mercenaries were lined up, zip-tied, and searched, their weapons cataloged as federal evidence. The biohazard technician who had been waiting to extract the child’s blood had already dropped to his knees with his hands locked behind his head, begging for immunity before an agent even touched him.

Sterling approached Emma, pulling off his heavy glove and offering a polite, solemn hand. "Mrs. Vance. You have endured an unimaginable ordeal over the last seven days. I am deeply sorry for the role my institution inadvertently played in prolonging this nightmare."

Emma took his hand, feeling the warmth of human decency for the first time in what felt like weeks. "Is it really over?"

Sterling looked back toward the dark runway and the blizzard sweeping over the Saint Lawrence River. "The immediate threat on Canadian soil is contained. But we must move quickly. The escrow protocol has triggered international freezes on forty-two accounts tied to Vance Holdings. We must secure you and your daughter in a federal safe facility before the fallout reaches Wall Street."
