Chapter 165 - The Boathouse Breach

Arthur raised the pistol, aligning the front sight with Emma’s chest. "Step away from the grate and walk the child up the stone stairs. Eleanor wants her in the study before midnight. The paperwork for the emergency guardianship transfer is already drafted. By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, the judge in Albany will have signed the order. Maya becomes the ward of the Vance Trust, and you... you get a very generous settlement and a one-way ticket to California."
"You think I’d sell my child to Eleanor?" Emma spat.
"You won't have a choice," Arthur replied coldly. "You don't have the resources to fight an estate with three hundred million dollars in assets. You never did. You were always just the stubborn daughter who thought morals could pay the property taxes."
Before Arthur’s finger could tighten on the trigger, a hand reached out from the darkness beneath the staircase landing behind him.
A soaked, blackened wool sleeve clamped around Arthur’s neck from behind, pulling his head back violently against the stone balustrade. Julian had not stayed on the ice; he had climbed the maintenance ladder bolted to the granite foundation while the floodlights were blinded by the steam.
Arthur let out a strangled gasp, his arm jerking upward as the pistol discharged into the timber ceiling above with a muffled *thwack*. Julian didn't strike him with a fist; he drove the heel of his boot into the back of Arthur’s knee, collapsing the lawyer’s stance, and then wrenched the suppressed pistol from his grip with a clean, surgical twist that snapped Arthur’s wrist with a loud crack.
Arthur screamed, falling onto the snow-covered flagstones of the landing.
Julian kicked the pistol down the stairs. It clattered against the granite steps, landing squarely at Emma’s feet. Julian leaned over the railing, his face pale as chalk, his lips blue, but his eyes burning with an icy ferocity.
"The key to the culvert is in his inside breast pocket," Julian gasped, fighting the tremors running through his limbs. "The bronze mortise key. Take it."
Emma didn't hesitate. She bounded up the three stone steps, reached into Arthur’s expensive cashmere coat, and yanked out a heavy, antique bronze key attached to an engraved Vance crest. Arthur groaned on the stones, clutching his broken wrist, his face twisted in agony.
"Emma... you don't know what she’ll do..." Arthur wheezed, his eyes rolling back in terror. "She’s not trying to keep the estate... she’s trying to destroy it before Zurich audits the books... if the trust goes to Maya, the forensic accountants will see what Eleanor spent in '94..."
"Shut up," Emma whispered coldly, shoving the key into her pocket. She descended the stairs, inserted the bronze key into the ancient padlock securing the iron grate, and turned it with all her strength.
With a grinding screech that sounded like tearing metal, the bolt slid free. Emma threw her shoulder against the grate, forcing it open just wide enough for Maya to slip through.
"Maya, go inside," Emma ordered gently, guiding the little girl into the pitch-black stone archway. "Stay on the dry stones. Don't touch the water."
"Mommy, where is Julian going?" Maya asked, her voice trembling.
May you like
Emma looked up the stairs. Julian was already descending, leaning heavily against the granite wall, his soaked clothes stiffening into frozen sheets.
"He’s coming with us, baby," Emma said, reaching up to support Julian’s weight as he stumbled down the final step. Together, the three of them slipped into the subterranean darkness beneath Vance Manor, pulling the heavy iron grate shut behind them just as the estate sirens began to wail across the frozen lake.
