Chapter 99 - The Sovereign’s Reckoning

Across the three giant monitors suspended above the judges' heads, the financial death sentence of Vance Capital played out in real time before the elite of the world.

*MARGIN CALL DEFAULT: VANCE CAPITAL MANAGEMENT.*

*CROSS-DEFAULT TRIGGERED: AVERY-VANCE ASSET HOLDINGS.*

*TOTAL SEIZURE AUTHORIZED: €7,842,000,000.*

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Bankers in bespoke suits reached for their phones in a panic, barking orders to liquidate secondary positions. The contagion was contained, but the Vance family was being vaporized in the open market.

"No... no!" Victoria screamed, grabbing at the papers scattered across her lectern as if she could physically hold the evaporating billions. "This is an error! The Whitaker collateral covers the debt! I am Victoria Whitaker!"

"You are Victoria Huber," Genevieve said coldly, stepping onto the dais, her walking stick striking the marble with rhythmic precision. "You are the daughter of Anna Huber, a maid who was dismissed for theft from my father’s estate in 1954. You have no claim, you have no bloodline, and you have no name."

Genevieve reached into her coat and tossed a yellowed, original birth certificate onto the bench in front of the magistrates.

"The Codicil of 1954 explicitly excludes you and any issue from your line from ever inheriting a single copper coin," Genevieve pronounced. "You are an outcast, Victoria. You always were."

Victoria looked down at the document. Her eyes went completely hollow. The forty-year delusion, the grand, psychopathic architecture of vengeance she had spent her life building, crumbled into dust in a matter of seconds.

She turned her gaze toward Richard—the son she had groomed to be an emperor, now cowering behind a wooden chair like a broken dog.

"You failure," Victoria hissed at Richard, her voice dripping with venomous hatred. "You weak, incompetent, pathetic coward. You couldn't even keep one woman under your thumb."

Richard stared at his mother, the realization of his total ruin settling into his bones. "You lied to me... you told me she had no power... you told me she was nothing without us!"

"She was everything!" Victoria screamed, lunging at Richard with clawed hands.

Security guards in dark blue uniforms rushed the platform, pulling the hysterical matriarch away from her son as she shrieked obscenities, her pearl necklace snapping, white pearls scattering and rolling across the marble floor like hail.

I stepped up to the podium, looking down at Richard.

He looked up at me from the floor where he had collapsed, his tailored suit rumpled, his hair disheveled, tears and sweat streaking his face.

"Eleanor..." he sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand toward the hem of my coat. "Please. You loved me once. For five years, I was your husband. Don't leave me with nothing."

I looked down at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated indifference.

"I didn't leave you with nothing, Richard," I said softly, leaning down so only he could hear my final words. "I took back what was mine. What’s left of you is simply what you were before you met me: an empty suit."

I turned my back on him.

The Chief Magistrate stood, his gavel striking the block three times with the finality of a tomb door closing. "By order of this Tribunal, all assets of Vance Capital are remanded to the receiver. Richard Vance and Victoria Huber are remanded into international custody pending indictment for corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and sovereign falsification."

Two armed officers hauled Richard to his feet, clamping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. He didn't look like a billionaire anymore; he looked like a convict being led to the gallows.

I took the Tenth Ledger from the bench, tucked it beneath my arm, and began to walk toward the grand exit of the hall, the crowd parting before me like the Red Sea.

Victory was absolute. The Vance family was erased.

Or so I thought.
