Chapter 59 - Checkmate in Canary Wharf

"You poisoned my father," I said, staring down at the broken matriarch who had made my life a living hell for five years.

"I did," Lillian gasped, her fingers clutching the blanket around her trembling knees. "And they promised me everything. They promised me that the Vance name would rise above the Whitakers. But in the end... we were both just cattle to the Directorate, Eleanor. Both of us."

*01:45... 01:44... 01:43...*

The countdown on the master console was entering its terminal phase. If the timer hit zero, the thermite charges embedded in the vault ceiling would liquefy the entire chamber, incinerating Lillian, Julian, me, and every shred of evidence of von Halen's treason.

"Julian," I whispered, not breaking eye contact with the two Directorate guards standing behind Lillian.

"On your mark," Julian muttered, his muscles coiled like a spring.

"Chancellor von Halen," I spoke clearly into the ceiling microphone. "You made one critical miscalculation."

"And what might that be, my dear child?" von Halen's amused voice echoed from above.

"You assumed my father wrote the 1898 Protocols alone."

Before von Halen could reply, I drew my sidearm in a blindingly fast, fluid arc.

*Crack! Crack!*

Two rounds punched through the visors of the Directorate guards behind Lillian before they could even squeeze their triggers. They collapsed like sacks of wet sand.

Julian lunged forward, sliding across the slick concrete to seize the central console. "Eleanor! The thermite detonators are hard-wired to the London power grid! I can't decouple them from here!"

"You don't need to decouple them," I said, stepping up to the glowing console.

I reached down to my neck and pulled out the thin platinum chain I had worn since the day my father died. Suspended from the chain was not a jewel, but a micro-miniaturized biometric override key forged from pure rhodium—the Queen's Seal.

I slammed the key into the central auxiliary port beneath the master monitor.

"System override," I said clearly. "Authorizer: Sovereign Eleanor Whitaker. Code: The Dead Do Not Forgive."

The red warning lights across the vault instantly died.

The screeching server cooling fans whined down to a whisper. The thermite countdown froze at *00:14*.

On the central screen, von Halen's master Directorate accounts—the private offshore war chests of the Twelve Continental Houses—began turning red, row by row, line by line, siphoning into an untraceable, decentralized sovereign trust bearing only my personal monogram.

Above us, over the intercom, von Halen's aristocratic composure finally shattered.

"What have you done?!" he roared, his voice laced with unhinged fury. "You have locked the Directorate out of the central clearinghouse! You have stripped our sovereign immunities!"

May you like

"I didn't strip your immunities, Christian," I whispered into the mic. "I handed them over to Interpol, the Department of Justice, and the Swiss Federal Prosecutor. Your jets have been grounded. Your bank accounts are frozen. You are no longer Chancellor of anything. You are a fugitive."
