Chapter 116 - The Matriarch's Web

"She expects you to come to New York," Helena said immediately, her brow furrowed as she looked at the dead monitor. "It's an obvious trap. Whitaker Tower is completely locked down by her security personnel. If you walk through those doors, you won't leave alive, whether you sign the documents or not."

"Of course it's a trap," I said, standing up and opening the steel footlocker secured beneath the van's bench. "Marian never leaves an outcome to chance. She offered five hundred million because she thinks I am motivated by the desire to return to the quiet life I had before the divorce."

"Aren't you?" Helena asked quietly.

I paused, looking at my reflection in the dark glass of the monitor.

The woman staring back at me was no longer the quiet, accommodating socialite who had sat in silence at charity galas while her husband whispered into Sloane Avery's ear. She was not the docile daughter-in-law who had swallowed Victoria Vance's veiled insults over Sunday brunches in Newport.

That woman had died the moment the pen touched the paper in that crowded ballroom, beneath the mocking gaze of three hundred aristocrats.

"That woman never existed," I said, turning back to Helena. "She was an invention of Arthur's protection program. A mask I wore so well that even I forgot what lay beneath it."

I pulled out a heavy satellite uplink transceiver and a biometric security ledger bound in black morocco leather—the personal journal of Arthur Whitaker, salvaged from the ruins of the Baden-Baden estate.

"Marian believes the Master Key cylinder contains the passwords to Arthur's foreign reserves," I explained, turning the heavy platinum cylinder between my fingers. "She thinks that by securing this, she can bypass the bloodline validation."

"Doesn't it?"

"No," I replied, twisting the base of the cylinder counter-clockwise until a soft mechanical click sounded within the metal casing. The outer shell separated, revealing a second, smaller core made of hollowed industrial sapphire. "Julian didn't steal the Master Key from the Zurich vault. He stole Arthur’s counter-offensive cipher. The fail-safe Arthur designed to be activated only if Marian ever resurfaced."

Helena leaned in, her eyes wide as she examined the tiny crystalline component. "What does it do?"

"Marian built the Eclipse on the infrastructure of Whitaker Global," I said, my voice hardening. "She routed her illicit clearing houses through our legacy cables. Every transaction she has executed over the past twenty years shares an umbilical cord with our core servers in Manhattan."

I looked at the clock on the wall.

It was 5:15 PM in Strasbourg. 11:15 AM in New York.

We had six hours and forty-five minutes before the final migration of the stolen trillions would become irreversible.

"Jean-Luc!" I called out to the driver. "Get us to the private airstrip in Colmar. We aren't flying a commercial manifest, and we aren't using Whitaker Global wings."

"Whose plane are we taking, Mrs. Whitaker?" the driver asked, throwing the van into gear.

"The only entity Marian cannot legally seize or shoot out of the sky," I replied. "The Sovereign Treasury transport of the Principality of Monaco. My father didn't just hide assets behind banks, Helena. He bought the banks that owned the sovereign debt of nations."
