Chapter 1 - MY HUSBAND ANNOUNCED OUR DIVORCE IN FRONT OF 300 WEALTHY GUESTS—WHILE HIS MISTRESS STOOD BESIDE HIM IN A SILVER GOWN, WAITING TO TAKE MY PLACE. THEN HE HANDED ME THE DIVORCE PAPERS AND EXPECTED ME TO CRY.

Grayson Thorne had planned every detail of my humiliation. His mother stood proudly beside him, his mistress was already wiping away fake tears, and three hundred members of high society watched as my husband publicly announced that our seven-year marriage was over.

We were inside the grand ballroom of The Whitaker House, surrounded by chandeliers, champagne, and people who had smiled at me for years. Grayson stood onstage looking almost sorrowful as he explained that our marriage had come to an end. Then he turned toward Sloane Avery, the woman standing beside him, and announced that he had found happiness again.

I watched the guests turn toward me, waiting for my reaction.

For seven years, his mother, Eleanor, had reminded me that I was just a woman from Maine who should be grateful to have married into the Thorne family. She treated their last name like a privilege I could never truly deserve. And now she was watching her son discard me in front of everyone who mattered to her.

Sloane looked almost delighted beneath her carefully practiced sadness. She had dressed for this evening as though she were already the next Mrs. Thorne.

Then Grayson approached me with a black leather folder.

Inside were the divorce papers, carefully prepared and ready for my signature. He held out his pen while guests leaned forward, expecting me to beg him to reconsider.

I didn't beg. I didn't even ask him why.

Instead, I stood, calmly asked a waiter for my coat, and accepted the folder. Grayson watched my face, searching for some sign that he had finally broken me.

I turned to the last page.

For years, I had listened to his family discuss their wealth, their connections, and their supposedly untouchable position in society. They had never once considered that the quiet woman sitting beside Grayson might have a history of her own.

I placed the pen against the paper and signed the name they knew.

Isla Mercer Thorne.

Then, directly beneath it, I wrote another name.

Aurelia Whitaker Mercer.

Grayson's eyebrows drew together. He stared at the second signature as though he were seeing it for the first time.

But it was Eleanor's reaction that caught my attention.

Her perfect smile tightened. For one brief moment, she looked at the paper differently, almost as though she recognized something she desperately wished she hadn't.

I closed the folder, handed Grayson his pen, and said one word.

"Congratulations."

Then I put on my black cashmere coat and walked toward the ballroom doors.

Behind me, Sloane leaned toward Grayson and whispered something. I didn't turn around to hear his answer.

That was when his phone started ringing.

He ignored it.

Then it rang again.

Across the ballroom, Eleanor's phone lit up. Moments later, his uncle reached for his phone, followed by the family attorney and several board members seated near the stage.

Suddenly, the people who had been watching my humiliation were staring at their screens.

I continued walking.

Behind me, Eleanor finally answered her call.

"Martin, this is not a good time."

I was almost at the doors when I heard her voice change.

She sounded nothing like the confident woman who had spent seven years looking down on me.

May you like

Then she said something that made Grayson turn toward her.

"What do you mean, frozen?"
