Chapter 96 - The Turncoat's Price

The upload initiated by Sloane Avery acted like an incendiary bomb dropped into the digital architecture of the European financial courts.

Inside our speeding vehicle, the auxiliary tablet flashed furiously with automated red flags emanating from the Luxembourg Court of International Arbitration. The court's automated filing system had accepted the encrypted payload, recognizing Sloane’s official digital seal as the compliance director for Vance Capital.

"The docket is compromised," Julian observed, his hands steady on the steering wheel as we blew past the border crossing into the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, our vehicle’s diplomatic plates deterring the local gendarmerie. "Every magistrate, every clerk, and every journalist on the court beat just received an automated alert: *New evidentiary filing in Vance vs. Whitaker Sovereign Trust.*"

"Victoria will know within minutes," Genevieve remarked, peering out into the gray, misty dawn breaking over the gothic spires of Luxembourg City. "Her private security will converge on Sloane’s hotel room to eliminate the leak."

"Julian," I said, looking up from the monitor. "Send an anonymous extraction team to Sloane’s suite. Have our operatives take her into custody before Victoria’s men get there."

Julian glanced back at me, his eyes questioning. "You’re saving her?"

"I’m preserving a hostile witness," I corrected coldly. "Sloane Avery will not die a martyr, nor will she get an easy escape. She will sit in an open courtroom and testify against Richard under oath. That is her penance."

"Understood," Julian nodded, keying a rapid sequence of commands to our perimeter team stationed in the city center.

I opened the Tenth Ledger once more. With Sloane’s uploaded security keys, the digital interface inside the book synchronized with the European banking clearinghouses. A massive, horrifying web of systemic leverage spread out across my screen.

Victoria Vance had borrowed against assets she didn't own.

To fund Richard’s lavish lifestyle, the disastrous expansion of Vance Capital, and the private military syndicate that had just attacked us, Victoria had taken out seven billion euros in synthetic margin loans from a consortium of Gulf banks and Swiss private institutions. She had pledged the *Whitaker Sovereign Trust* as collateral—betting everything that Eleanor Whitaker would be dead before dawn, allowing her to claim the inheritance and settle the debt before the margin call hit at 9:00 AM.

"Look at this," I said, showing the screen to Genevieve. "The margin call triggers in fifty minutes. If Victoria cannot prove she possesses the direct bloodline credentials and the physical Tenth Ledger by 9:00 AM, the syndicate will automatically seize Vance Capital’s entire asset base."

"She was dancing on the edge of a cliff," Genevieve said with a cold, disgusted chuckle. "A beggar dressed in silk. She didn't want the Whitaker name out of pride. She needed it to escape bankruptcy."

"She thought she was buying an empire," I said, fastening my dark overcoat and checking my hair in the vehicle's visor mirror. My face was pale, my jaw set like carved stone, but my eyes burned with an icy, lethal fire. "Instead, she bought her own execution."

The SUV slowed as we entered the cobblestone plaza surrounding the Grand Ducal Palace of Justice. Sleek black limousines, armored Maybachs, and tactical security details lined the perimeter.

Victoria’s private army was everywhere. But the sovereign law of the court was absolute, and three hundred members of Europe’s financial royalty had already gathered inside the grand hall to witness what they believed would be the uncontested transfer of the greatest fortune in the Western world.

"Are you ready, Eleanor?" Julian asked, killing the engine in an alleyway fifty yards from the palace steps.

I picked up the Tenth Ledger, cradling the silver-bound volume in my arm like a sovereign scepter.

May you like

"I’ve been ready since the Plaza," I replied.
