Chapter 100 - The Eclipse Protocol

The heavy bronze doors of the Palace of Justice opened to the crisp morning air.

Hundreds of flashbulbs illuminated the misty square, where a dozen satellite news trucks were already broadcasting the shocking downfall of Vance Capital across every major network on the planet. I stood at the top of the grand steps, Genevieve beside me and Julian flanking my right, watching the authorities load Victoria Huber and Richard Vance into separate armored transport vans below.

The air smelled clean, washed by the rain. For the first time in years, the weight in my chest was gone. The name *Whitaker* was restored, untarnished and supreme.

"It is finished," Genevieve murmured, her hand resting warmly on my shoulder. "You have done what your mother could not. You reclaimed the throne."

"It's finished," I agreed, a faint, weary smile touching my lips.

Suddenly, Julian’s encrypted tactical earpiece emitted a sharp, high-pitched squelch—a sound so piercing that Julian physically winced, grabbing his ear.

"What is that?" I asked, turning toward him.

Julian’s face went dead white. The military calm that had never wavered through ambushes, missile strikes, and firefights vanished in an instant, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Julian?" Genevieve’s voice sharpened.

"It's... it's a priority broadcast override on the private Whitaker frequency," Julian stammered, pulling the slate from his belt. The screen was flashing with a black-and-gold insignia that was not the dual serpent of the Whitakers, nor was it the crest of Vance Capital.

It was an eclipsed sun.

Down in the plaza, the engine of the armored transport van carrying Victoria Vance suddenly cut out.

The four local gendarmerie guards escorting the van didn't drive away. Instead, they reached into their tactical vests, drew silenced pistols, and executed the surrounding court bailiffs with four simultaneous, suppressed shots to the head.

The crowd in the plaza didn't even have time to scream before smoke canisters exploded across the cobblestones, blanketing the square in thick, sulfurous white fog.

A voice—deep, heavily modulated, and radiating cold, terrifying authority—broke through Julian’s tablet speaker, broadcasting directly to the device in his hand.

*"Mrs. Eleanor Whitaker,"* the voice spoke, chilling the blood in my veins. *"You performed admirably in dismantling our Vance proxy. Victoria was always too emotional, too volatile to manage Level Eight operations."*

I froze. "Who is this?"

*"Your father called us the Architects of the Eclipse,"* the voice answered calmly. *"Victoria Huber thought she was acting on her own ambition. She was merely our bait to flush the Tenth Ledger out of the House of Glass. You did what no one else could do, Eleanor: you unlocked the silicons, deciphered the routing keys, and brought the master volume directly to the open satellite net."*

Behind me, the sound of a gun racking its slide snapped like dry bone.

I turned around slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Genevieve Whitaker was not looking at the plaza. She had stepped behind Julian, her mother-of-pearl pistol raised, pointing the barrel directly between Julian's shoulder blades.

"Genevieve...?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the rising sirens in the fog below.

May you like

The old woman did not smile. Her gray eyes, once warm with family pride, were dead, empty, and pitiless as an arctic sea.

"You have the Whitaker spine, Eleanor," Genevieve said softly, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "A pity you never learned the first rule of the dynasty: the Tenth Ledger was never meant to belong to a living heir."
