Chapter 92 - The Phantom Network

The bunker was not merely a fallout shelter; it was the nerve center of an unseen global empire. As Genevieve input a sixteen-digit alphanumeric string into the subterranean terminal, bank after bank of cold-cathode displays flickered to life across the granite walls.

Maps of the world’s major shipping lanes, private fiber-optic undersea cables, sovereign wealth vaults, and black-pool liquidity exchanges illuminated the subterranean dark.

"The House of Glass was designed to be disposable," Genevieve said, walking steadily toward the central console. She took the Tenth Ledger from my hands and placed it into a custom-fitted indentation on the steel console table.

The moment the silver-bound book touched the docking recess, internal magnetic locks within the book’s spine disengaged with a sharp metallic *clack*. The cover slid back on micro-tracks, revealing that the Tenth Ledger was not paper at all—it was an analog-digital cryptographic hybrid, housing an ancient silicon core sealed in liquid mercury.

"Richard thought he was hunting for family receipts and bank authorizations," I murmured, watching streams of encrypted hexadecimal code cascade down the central monitor. "He thought this was just a balance sheet."

"Money is for servants and parvenus," Genevieve replied coldly. "This is sovereign jurisdiction. The Tenth Ledger contains the master encryption keys to the original transatlantic financial routing system established after the Bretton Woods Conference. My father and three other families built the infrastructure through which every dollar, pound, and franc flows off the books."

Julian stood behind us, watching the tactical monitors that displayed exterior camera feeds from hidden micro-lenses disguised as pine bark and alpine stone.

"The gunships are retreating toward the Italian border," Julian reported, his brow furrowed. "They heard Eleanor’s voice. Richard panicked. He knows the assassination failed, which means Victoria will pivot immediately to the contingency plan."

"And what is her contingency plan?" I asked, turning to Genevieve.

"Total asset seizure," Genevieve answered without hesitation. "Under the guise of the Vance-Whitaker merger, Victoria intends to invoke the Emergency Conservatorship Protocol at the Court of International Arbitration in Luxembourg. If she presents her forged lineage papers before the international tribunal without our presence to contest it, the entire Whitaker estate—every trust, every fleet, every sovereign bond—will be legally transferred to Vance Capital by sunrise."

"She’s moving the venue to Luxembourg," I realized, the puzzle pieces locking into place with devastating clarity. "She knows she can't kill us cleanly, so she's going to use the international court system to strip my legal name before I can step out of Europe."

"She won't get the chance," Julian said, his eyes narrowing as he tapped a route into the navigation console. "There is an abandoned military tunnel running beneath the Swiss-Italian border, five kilometers from this bunker. An armored rail car sits in the maintenance shaft. In four hours, we can be at a private airfield in Turin."

"Turin is compromised," Genevieve stated calmly. "Victoria controls the Piedmont radar sector. We go through the Rhine Valley. We take the low road—the iron road."

I looked at the cascading data on the screen. Among the endless lines of code, an anomaly caught my eye—a signature routing tag embedded deep within Vance Capital’s offshore holding shell. It bore a monogram I knew far too well, but one that shouldn't have been there.

*S.A.*

"Sloane Avery," I whispered, zooming in on the financial stream. "She’s not in an asylum. She’s not even in exile. Victoria didn't discard her—she weaponized her."

Genevieve tilted her head, her gray eyes glinting in the monitor glow. "Explain."

"Richard discarded Sloane publicly to clean up his image for the merger," I said, a cold smile spreading across my face. "But Sloane was Vance Capital’s chief financial compliance officer for six years. She knew where every single dead body was buried. Richard didn't let her walk away. He locked her inside a shell entity in Luxembourg to bear the legal liability if the merger collapsed."

I straightened my spine, feeling the heavy hum of the terminal beneath my palms.

"We aren't just going to Luxembourg to stop Victoria," I said, my voice hardening into diamond. "We are going to give Sloane Avery the one thing Richard took from her: the opportunity to burn Vance Capital to the ground from the inside out."
