Chapter 43 - The Phantom of Wall Street

The guard lost consciousness before he could say another word. I checked his pulse; it was faint, but steady enough for emergency services. I used my tactical comm to patch an encrypted line to Julian Mercer, my head of covert operations and the only man in Manhattan whose loyalty had remained unbroken through the war with the Vances.

"Julian," I spoke sharply into the microphone. "Get a containment extraction team down to sub-level seven beneath Whitaker Tower immediately. I have a wounded mercenary and a catastrophic breach."

There was static on the line, followed by Julian's hurried, strained voice. "Aurelia? Thank God. Where have you been? Manhattan is going dark. Half the power grid south of 14th Street just collapsed, and the New York Federal Reserve's automated clearing house has triggered a complete transaction freeze."

"It’s not a grid failure," I replied, standing up and scanning the dark labyrinth of train tunnels disappearing into the old underground passages. "It’s Lillian."

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the radio. Julian, usually unflappable even in the face of billion-dollar stock runs and corporate assassinations, took a ragged breath. "Aurelia... Lillian Whitaker died twenty-five years ago. I stood at her memorial."

"We stood at an empty box, Julian," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "Jonathan Vance didn't marry me because of my father's holdings. The entire Vance alliance was a warden contract. They were paid by the Ouroboros Directorate to keep my mother under ice beneath this building. And now she's loose, with the founding ledgers in her hand."

"Aurelia, listen to me," Julian’s voice turned desperate. "You need to pull back to the surface. I just monitored a police dispatch from the private helipad at the Battery. An unmarked corporate helicopter landed three minutes ago without transponders. A woman fitting your mother's description boarded it, escorted by men wearing the historic heraldry of the Whitaker Old Guard."

"The Old Guard?" I stepped out of the tunnel, walking back into the flooded chamber. "Those men were retired during my father’s purge in 2004."

"They weren't retired," Julian said grimly. "They were waiting for their general. And Aurelia... she left something behind for you at the central dispatch desk on floor forty."

I lowered the gun. "What did she leave?"

"A courier box addressed to 'The Sovereign in Waiting.' And inside it, Aurelia... it’s your original marriage certificate to Jonathan Vance. Across his signature, she drew a single line in red ink with a note: *'You broke their teeth, daughter. Now let us break their spine.'*"
