Chapter 32 - The Blood Protocol of Bahnhofstrasse

The tungsten stylus was seven inches long, weighted with depleted uranium at the tip for stamping sovereign wax seals, and ground to an industrial needle point.

When Julian’s shoe crushed a fragment of broken crystal two feet to my right, I did not retreat. I lunged upward with the coiled fury of someone whose entire existence had been forged in the crucible of betrayal.

I struck low, driving the stylus through the fabric of his trousers and deep into the soft hollow behind his right knee—the popliteal artery.

Julian let out a sharp, ragged gasp of agony as his leg buckled beneath him. The submachine gun swung wildly, firing a blind burst into the ceiling as his weight collapsed against the marble pedestal. Sparks rained down like dead stars, illuminating the blood soaking through his bespoke trousers in an expanding, viscous puddle.

"You... viper," he hissed through clenched teeth, his free hand swinging a vicious backhand toward my jaw.

I ducked beneath the blow, caught his wrist with both hands, and slammed his gun arm down onto the sharp edge of the broken decanter. The steel clattered against the stone floor. Before he could reach for his backup blade, I had the weapon in my hands, its cold grip heavy and familiar against my palm.

I pressed the barrel directly against his temple.

"The Directorate," I demanded, breathing through my nose, my pulse cold and deliberate. "Who authorized the breach?"

Julian laughed—a wet, rattling sound. Blood was already pooling thick around his boots. "Look at the screen, Aurelia. The emergency reserves aren't failing because of a blackout. They’re transferring."

Behind us, a dull red emergency beacon sputtered to life, bathing the subterranean chamber in a bloody crimson hue. The main terminal was flickering back online, powered not by the city grid, but by an external satellite link bypassing the Swiss regulators entirely.

On the massive tactical display, the Sovereign Whitaker Reserve was being systematically dissected. Hundred-million-dollar tranches were evaporating into numbered accounts across Grand Cayman, Singapore, and Vaduz.

And at the bottom of the execution script, signing off on the total liquidation of my family's legacy, was a digital signature that made the air freeze in my lungs:

*AUTHORIZATION: JONATHAN WHITAKER — OMEGA OVERRIDE.*

"Your father didn't call to save you, girl," Julian coughed, a grin splitting his blood-stained lips. "He called to verify you were inside the perimeter. He needed your living retinal scan to unlock the final tranche. You were the key that opened the door to the slaughterhouse. And now... he’s closing it behind you."

"Liar," I said coldly.

"Check the timestamp," he whispered, pointing a trembling, scarlet-stained finger at the console. "The transmission didn't come from the Black Forest. It came from Manhattan. From the penthouse of Vance Tower."

A sickening chill swept through my veins. The puzzle pieces, which I thought I had arranged into an impenetrable fortress of vengeance, shattered into a labyrinth of shadows.

Julian reached slowly into his inner coat pocket. I didn't hesitate; I fired once into the stone inches from his ear, deafening him. "Don't move."

"Take it," Julian muttered, flicking a small titanium flash drive toward my shoes. "The master routing files. He thinks I'm his faithful hound. He doesn't know I kept the ledger of his exile. If you want to know what happened to your mother, Aurelia... you won't find it in a vault. You'll find it at the place where your marriage began."

Before I could press the barrel closer to extract the truth, the vault doors shuddered. A deafening metallic scream echoed through the corridor. The Ouroboros cleanup team had arrived at the perimeter, and the smell of thermite began to hiss through the ventilation grates.
