Chapter 9 - The New Monogram

The legal dissolution of my marriage to Grayson Thorne was finalized in a quiet, private courtroom downtown before a judge who treated me not as a jilted housewife, but as the principal sovereign of the city’s economic foundation.
There was no alimony. There was no division of assets. There was only a swift, surgical extraction of a parasite from a healthy host.
When I walked out of the courthouse steps into the afternoon sunlight, a battery of reporters from the local business journals and national tabloids surged forward, shouting questions, thrusting microphones toward my face.
“Mrs. Thorne, do you have a statement regarding the bankruptcy of Thorne Industries?”
“Aurelia Whitaker, is it true you engineered the entire downfall of your ex-husband in retaliation for his affair?”
I didn't stop. I walked straight past them toward the open door of my black town car, Marcus holding an umbrella to shield me from the flashing lights.
Before stepping inside, I paused for just a moment, turning to look directly into the camera lenses.
"There is no Mrs. Thorne," I said clearly, my voice carrying effortlessly over the shouting crowd. "There is only Aurelia Whitaker Mercer."
I slipped into the backseat, the heavy door closing with a satisfying, airtight thud that shut out the noise of the world.
Marcus slid into the driver's seat, glancing back in the rearview mirror with a respectful nod.
"Where to, Miss Aurelia?"

I looked down at my left hand—bare, unburdened, and entirely free of the golden cage I had worn for seven years.
"Home, Marcus," I smiled. "Just home."
