Chapter 114 - The Phantom Vault in Strasbourg

Before we could cross the Atlantic, we needed to shed our identities and disappear entirely from Marian’s global surveillance matrix.
The Sikorsky landed in an abandoned industrial rail yard on the outskirts of Strasbourg, just across the French border. The rain was falling in heavy, relentless sheets, drumming against the rusted corrugated roofs of silent locomotive sheds.
Waiting in the shadows of an empty grain elevator was an unmarked black Mercedes van, its engine idling silently. A man in a grease-stained raincoat stepped out, nodding once toward Helena.
"Jean-Luc," Helena said, keeping her weapon lowered but ready. "Is the relay secure?"
"For now," the man replied in low French. "The Eclipse triggered an international red notice three hours ago. Interpol believes this aircraft was hijacked by corporate terrorists. Every commercial flight manifest between Frankfurt, Paris, and New York is flagged with your biometrics, Mrs. Vance."
"Whitaker," I corrected him sharply, my voice cutting through the damp chill. "I ceased being Mrs. Vance the moment that sham of a marriage was dissolved in the ballroom."
We climbed into the back of the van. The interior was stripped bare, replaced with bank after bank of decryption processors and encrypted satellite links running on localized kinetic power cells.
"Hook the optical wafer to the offline reader," I directed Helena. "I want to see what my mother built while I was playing the devoted wife."
Helena inserted the wafer into the laser terminal. The screens flickered, cascading into waterfalls of green code before resolving into an intricate, terrifying schematic of international finance.
It was not merely a list of bank accounts. It was a parasitic circulatory system.
For thirty years, Marian Whitaker had used the Eclipse Syndicate to construct an invisible duplicate of the world’s major clearing houses. Every time Whitaker Global moved fifty billion dollars in sovereign bonds, a fraction of a percent was routed through shell entities bearing the names of dead Vance scions.
The divorce had been engineered to dump the entirety of the debt accrued by this phantom network onto Julian’s corporate ledger, while transferring the sovereign assets directly into Marian’s private offshore trust.
"Look at the execution date," Helena whispered, pointing at the bottom of the ledger.
My blood ran cold.
The final asset migration was scheduled for midnight tonight.
"She didn't just want the Whitaker fortune," I said, tracing the algorithmic architecture. "She designed the system to wipe out the Vance family entirely, leaving no witnesses, while laundering three hundred billion dollars through the liquidation of our marital estate."
"And if you had stayed married to Julian?" Helena asked.
"I would have been indicted alongside him as a co-conspirator," I said, a bitter, lethal smile forming on my lips. "Julian thought he was discarding a meek, broken wife to enjoy his wealth with his mistress. In reality, that signature I signed in front of those three hundred guests was the only thing that detached my name from the execution block."
"Then why did your mother try to kill you on the cliff?"
"Because when I signed that document," I said, "I didn't sign 'Eleanor Vance'. I signed using my father's private sovereign monogram—the one that required the physical key to finalize the dissolution. Marian thought Julian had the key. But Julian gave it to me before he died."
I held up the bloody cylinder.

"Now," I said, "we take the battle to the one place Marian believes she has already won."
