Chapter 90 - The Tenth Ledger

Genevieve turned and walked toward the towering wall of slate behind her desk. She pressed her palm against a biometric brass plate set flush into the rock.

With a deep, resonant rumble, a section of the slate wall slid back, revealing an illuminated titanium safe. Inside lay a single, ancient leather ledger bound in tarnished silver filigree—the Tenth Ledger of Leopold Whitaker.

"Your mother and I did not steal the gold from Paris in nineteen eighty-nine to enrich ourselves," Genevieve said, her voice dropping into a solemn cadence. "We moved it because we discovered what our father had actually built."

"The Leviathan?" I asked.

"The Leviathan was merely an outpost," Genevieve said, turning back to me, the heavy silver-bound book resting in her hands. "A diversion designed to draw the greed of men like Richard Vance and the cabals of Zurich. This ledger contains the cryptographic ownership of the underlying infrastructure of the Western world's sovereign debt clearinghouse. Whoever controls the Tenth Ledger controls the solvency of twenty-two nations."

She laid the book on the table between us.

"I am eighty-two years old, Eleanor," Genevieve whispered, her eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity. "I have held this line alone for forty years, waiting for someone with the Whitaker spine to take my place. The divorce at the Plaza was your trial by fire. You passed. Now, take the ledger, take my seat, and assume command of the shadow throne."

I stared down at the silver-bound volume. My hand hovered over the cool, tarnished metal. Everything I had fought for—the survival of my name, the vengeance against Richard, the total reclamation of my identity—culminated in this single, terrifying moment of absolute sovereignty.

I reached out and laid my palm upon the Tenth Ledger.

Instantly, a sharp, piercing klaxon alarm shattered the quiet of the mountain sanctuary.

Red emergency lights flashed along the perimeter of the glass walls, bathing the room in crimson. On the slate desk, three auxiliary monitors blinked to life, displaying a real-time satellite feed of the valley below.

Four black tactical transport helicopters, bearing no national markings or corporate insignia, were cresting the mountain ridge at combat speed, their nose-mounted cannons tracking directly toward the cantilevered glass hall.

Julian drew his weapon, sprinting toward the panoramic glass. "Eleanor! We have incoming! Heavy gunships—unidentified transponders!"

Genevieve did not flinch, but her jaw set into iron. She looked at the monitors, then turned her piercing gray eyes back to me, a cold realization dawning across her features.

"They didn't track you here, Eleanor," Genevieve murmured, her voice steady amidst the blaring sirens. "Someone activated the Tenth Ledger’s internal locator the moment you touched it."

A speaker on the console crackled to life, cutting through the alarm. A voice emerged—male, cultured, and chillingly triumphant, speaking through the encrypted tactical channel.

"Thank you for locating the final ledger, Mrs. Vance. My mother sends her warmest regards from the shadows."

Richard’s voice.

Before I could speak, the first missile detached from the lead gunship, streaking across the sky straight toward the House of Glass.
