Chapter 91 - The Shattered Glass

The missile tore through the alpine air with a high-pitched, shrieking roar. In the microsecond before detonation, Genevieve Whitaker did not scream, nor did she flinch. With the unnatural calm of an architect who had foreseen every possible ruin, she slammed the palm of her withered hand onto an unadorned brass stud set into the floorboards beneath the slate desk.
"Down!" Julian lunged across the flagstones, his massive frame hurtling toward me like a shield.
The floor beneath us gave way before the warhead made impact.
A pneumatically controlled trapdoor snapped open, pitching Julian, Genevieve, and me down a slick, polished steel chute angled steeply into the granite heart of the mountain. Above us, the world ceased to be solid. The blast hit the House of Glass with the thunderous fury of a miniature sun. The concussive shockwave rippled down the chute, a scorching backdraft of heat, pulverized stone, and razor-sharp crystal shards that rained against the heavy blast doors automatically slamming shut behind us.
The subterranean blast doors locked with a series of hydraulic thuds that resonated deep in my teeth. We spilled out onto a rubberized floor in a reinforced command bunker carved directly into the mountain bedrock, fifty feet below the cantilevered ruin of the sanctuary.
I clutched the Tenth Ledger to my chest, my knuckles pale, my breathing ragged. The heavy volume was cold, untouched by the fire above.
Julian rolled to his feet instantly, his weapon drawn, his eyes scanning the dim, amber-lit chamber. "Perimeter breach. The structure above is completely obliterated. Those weren’t ordinary private security birds—those were military-spec gunships equipped with heavy anti-armor ordnance."
Genevieve sat up on the rubber matting, smoothing the lapels of her dark coat with meticulous precision, as though she had merely stumbled on a curb rather than survived a direct missile strike.
"Of course they are military-spec," Genevieve said, her voice dry as parchment. "Victoria Vance never hires street thugs when she can buy disgraced generals. She has waited forty years to erase my branch of the family. Richard is merely the blunt instrument swinging the hammer."
Above our heads, through the thick rock, came the rhythmic, bone-rattling thrum of the gunships circling the smoke-choked ridge, hovering like vultures over a smoking pyre.
A tactical radio built into the bunker's console hissed with static, then Richard’s voice broke through once more, chillingly polite, arrogant, and saturated with toxic triumph.
"Command to Alpha Team: Ground sweeps are unnecessary. That blast radius was absolute. No organism survived the detonation," Richard’s voice crackled through the speaker. "Secure the perimeter. Bring up the excavation drones. The Tenth Ledger is forged from titanium and tempered silver; it will survive the rubble. Retrieve the book, and ensure Eleanor’s remains are identified for the press release. Tragic alpine gas explosion. The Vance-Whitaker consolidation will be announced in London by midnight."
I stood up, stepping toward the console. The amber emergency light illuminated the cold fury in my eyes. I reached out, thumbed the transmitter button on the console, and spoke into the microphone with lethal, ice-cold clarity.
"You always did cut corners on your due diligence, Richard."
Silence fell over the radio—an absolute, suffocating silence from thirty thousand feet above.
"Eleanor?" Richard’s voice faltered, the smooth, aristocratic facade cracking into sheer disbelief.
"You should have learned at the Plaza, and you should have learned in Zurich," I said softly, my voice cutting through the speaker like a blade. "You cannot kill a sovereign on her own mountain. Now run while you still have fuel, because when I reach London, there will be no mercy left in the ledger."
I cut the transmission with a single flick of my thumb.

Genevieve looked up at me from the shadows, a faint, terrifying smile curving her weathered lips. "Splendid, my girl. Now let us show that usurper what happens when you awaken the true heirs of the bloodline."
