Chapter 55 - The Reckoning

I walked down the marble steps until I stood directly before him. The chains clinked against the stone as he shrank back, terrified of the woman he had treated like a doormat for half a decade.

"In the old days," von Halen stated from behind me, "the Directorate would have resolved this bloodline insult by dropping the Vance family into the Rhine with iron collars around their necks."

Richard let out a strangled sob, pressing his forehead against my boots. "Mercy! Eleanor, please, have mercy! I'll sign anything! I'll give up the Vance name! I'll work as a laborer, anything—just let me live!"

"Death is far too dignified an exit for a Vance," I said, looking down at the crown of his trembling head. "Death allows people to romanticize you as a victim of circumstances."

I turned to Chancellor von Halen.

"Strip him of every asset down to his birth certificate," I commanded. "Every trust fund, every property, every piece of art his grandfather ever purchased with stolen Whitaker capital. Reassign his personal identity to the Directorate Penal Logistics Bureau in the salt mines of Svalbard. He will spend the next forty years logging container manifests in the Arctic for minimum international wage. Not a penny more, not a penny less."

Richard’s eyes rolled back in pure horror. "No... no, please! Not Svalbard! You can't do this!"

"Take him away," von Halen barked.

The guards seized Richard by his chains, hauling him backward across the stone floor. His screams bounced off the ancient rafters, fading down the subterranean corridors until the heavy iron doors slammed shut, plunging the hall once more into dead silence.

I turned back to the Council of Twelve.

The eleven delegates remained standing, their gazes fixed on me with unyielding intensity.

"The traitor scion has been judged," von Halen announced formally. "Now, Sovereign Whitaker... we must address the breach."

"The breach?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

Von Halen tapped his ivory cane on the obsidian table. Instantly, the blue fiber-optic network flickered, turning a warning shade of crimson. A holographic projection hovered above the table—a massive global map detailing high-frequency financial channels originating from a subterranean facility beneath the City of London.

"Lillian Vance did not merely escape Newport to save her own skin," von Halen explained gravely. "Before your counter-offensive struck, she uploaded fifty percent of the stolen Whitaker core protocols into the London Clearing House. She has activated the Omega Vault."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "The Omega Vault was sealed by my father in 1994."

"And Lillian has found the bypass key," the French matriarch said, her voice tight with panic. "If she executes the dump, forty percent of the global sovereign liquidity pool will collapse within forty-eight hours. She is burning the entire world to ash just to spite you."
