Chapter 101 - The Matriarch's Treason

The air inside the Luxembourg safehouse turned arctic the moment Genevieve leveled the pearl-handled barrel against Julian’s spine. Outside, through the reinforced panoramic glass, the plaza below was choked in dense white phosphorous smoke. Distant gunfire crackled in sharp, rhythmic double-taps—the unmistakable cadence of military-grade extraction specialists systematically eliminating the remaining bailiffs and local gendarmerie.
"Genevieve, lower the weapon," Julian breathed, his body rigid, the muscles along his neck locked like iron cables. The tablet in his trembling hands continued to hum with static, the distorted voice of the Eclipse Architect lingering in the digital air like a death sentence. "Whatever they promised you, whatever debt you think you are settling, you are shooting your own blood."
"Blood?" Genevieve’s laugh was brittle, a dry, clicking sound that had no mirth in it. The grandmotherly warmth that had cloaked her for decades fell away completely, revealing the cold, predatory calculation of a woman who had survived three generations of financial warfare. "Blood is a sentimental liability, Julian. It is a myth invented by dynastic patriarchs to keep their daughters and mothers compliant while the men play at empire. Your grandfather understood that. Your father forgot it. And you... you were merely an inconvenient bridge to the tenth vault."
I took a slow, calculated half-step to the left, angling my body between Genevieve’s sightline and the heavy mahogany desk where my briefcase lay open. "You were never Victoria’s benefactor," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through my veins. "You fed Victoria the stolen security protocols. You deliberately let her believe she had orchestrating the coup against the Whitaker estate. You wanted her to take the fall in Luxembourg so that Julian and I would be forced into the open to decrypt the master silicon."
"Of course, Eleanor," Genevieve replied smoothly, her gray eyes narrowing as she tracked my movement. "Victoria Huber was an ambitious little vulgarity with just enough pedigree to be plausible and far too much vanity to see the strings attached to her wrists. She thought she was replacing you. She thought that wretched little ballroom in Manhattan was her coronation. In truth, that entire farce was staged by us to force the activation of the Tenth Ledger. We needed a Whitaker with pristine sovereign lineage to authorize the global cipher bypass. You were the only one left who possessed the retinal and biological signatures."
"And now that the satellite relay is open, you don't need either of us," Julian said, his knuckles whitening against the edge of the tablet.
"You always were slow to read the balance sheet, darling," Genevieve whispered, her finger curling inexorably inward against the mother-of-pearl trigger.

Before her hammer could fall, the heavy ballistic window behind us shattered inward in an explosion of tempered glass and high-velocity lead. A sniper round, fired from the bell tower of the cathedral four hundred meters across the fog-shrouded square, punched clean through Genevieve’s right shoulder.
The impact spun the old matriarch around like a rag doll, her pistol clattering against the marble floor as a spray of dark arterial blood struck the whitewashed wall. The tablet dropped from Julian’s fingers, clattering on the floor as two flash-bang grenades tumbled through the shattered window frame, filling the room with blinding phosphor and deafening thunder.
