Chapter 46 - The Pariah at the Pier

Before we could mobilize the helicopter for Newport, our surveillance grid lit up with an alert from the Chelsea Piers. Jonathan Vance had resurfaced.

He was not traveling with his usual retinue of PR handlers, bodyguards, or sycophantic socialites. According to the drone feed, he was alone, dressed in a soiled trench coat, attempting to board an offshore commercial tugboat bound for international waters beyond federal maritime jurisdiction.

"Do you want me to send the tactical team?" Julian asked, his hand hovering over the dispatch console.

"No," I said, buttoning my coat. "I'll handle my ex-husband myself."

Ten minutes later, the tires of my armored black Maybach screeched against the wet timber of Pier 59. Rain had begun to fall over the Hudson, a cold, needle-sharp drizzle that blurred the lights of New Jersey across the gray river.

Jonathan was carrying two heavy leather duffel bags toward the gangplank of a rusted industrial vessel. When the headlights of my car pinned him against the wet bulkheads, he dropped one of the bags, shielding his eyes with a pale, shaking hand.

"Aurelia?" he screamed above the wind, his voice shrill, cracking with panic. "Stay back! Don't come near me!"

I stepped out of the vehicle, holding a black umbrella, the click of my high heels steady against the sodden wood. I did not draw my weapon. I didn't need to. He looked like a cornered dog, his aristocratic face pale, his immaculate hair plastered to his forehead by the rain.

"Leaving so soon, Jonathan?" I asked, my voice calm, almost polite. "Victoria is currently waiting in a federal holding cell at Teterboro. Sloane Avery has already sold her exclusive tell-all interview to the tabloids for fifty thousand dollars to pay her legal retainers. And you're sneaking onto a garbage scow like a stowaway."

"You don't understand what you've done!" he shrieked, clutching the remaining duffel bag to his chest as if it were a shield. "You think you won! You think you're clever because you humiliated me in front of the board and took back the trust! You didn't win anything, Aurelia! You pulled the pin on a grenade that’s going to blow this entire hemisphere to hell!"

"I woke my mother," I said, taking two deliberate steps toward him. "Tell me where she went."
