Chapter 106 - The Silent Defector

We breached the outer perimeter through a blind spot beneath the drainage culvert where the mountain runoff bypassed the seismic grids. The codes my father had left in his field notes functioned flawlessly: as we crossed the second optical tripwire, the automated infrared cameras pivoted away precisely three seconds before our passage, executing an internal loop that transmitted pre-recorded footage back to the master control station.
Inside the secondary compound, however, the silence was unnatural.
There were no patrols on the gravel paths. The floodlights that should have swept the inner courtyard were dark, their heavy power cables severed cleanly at the distribution boxes.
"Something is wrong," Julian whispered, drawing the silenced Walther PPK he had salvaged from the safehouse. "The guard posts are abandoned."
We moved through the shadowed colonnade of the carriage house. The air smelled faintly of ozone and spent propellant. As we rounded the corner toward the private communications pavilion, a dark silhouette stepped out from behind a stone pillar, a suppressed tactical carbine raised to shoulder level.
Julian raised his pistol, but before he could fire, I slapped his forearm down.
"Hold your fire," I ordered.
The figure lowered the weapon slightly, stepping into the pale morning light filtering through the pine canopy. It was a woman in her late forties, dressed in unmarked slate-gray tactical gear, her short dark hair flecked with gray, a scar tracing down her cheekbone from ear to jawline.
"Eleanor," she said, her voice low and raspy. "You're fifteen minutes late. Your father would have fired you."
"Helena," I exhaled, the tension in my chest loosening just a fraction.
Julian stared between us, bewildered. "Who the hell is this?"
"Helena Vance-Rostova," I said coldly. "Your father’s half-sister. The one your mother claimed died in an avalanche in Zermatt twenty-two years ago."
Helena let out a humorless snort, her thumb resting on the safety selector of her rifle. "Genevieve couldn't kill me in the Alps, so she had me legally declared dead and wiped my security clearances to seize my father's sovereign share. I’ve spent twenty-two years running private reconnaissance on the Eclipse. The sniper round in Luxembourg? That was my welcome home present to your mother."

"You shot your own sister-in-law?" Julian stammered.
"I missed her carotid artery by three inches because of the crosswind," Helena corrected sharply, turning toward the heavy oak doors of the main hunting lodge. "And if you want to stop what they’re preparing to do with the Tenth Ledger, we have less than twenty minutes before the transatlantic clearinghouse begins the pre-market settlement."
