Chapter 64 - The Broken Scion's Plea

"Eleanor, please... if you can hear this..." Richard’s voice broke into a choked sob that sounded pathetic echoing across the reinforced steel walls of the vault. "They took Mother. They took Sloane. They put us in the lower ballast. They said... they said our debt didn't die with the bankruptcy filing. They said the Whitaker girl owns our skins, but they own our blood."

Julian frowned, stepping toward the audio terminal. "It’s an unencrypted VHF transmission originating from the *Leviathan*'s lower deck. They're intentionally broadcasting this on our private frequency. It’s an invitation."

"It is a distraction," Alistair warned, his eyes never leaving the radar screen as the massive silhouette of the icebreaker slid into the private Whitaker deep-water slipway four hundred feet beneath the Canary Wharf docks. "Arthur Sterling knows you have a weakness, Eleanor. Despite everything Richard did to you, despite the treachery and the public humiliation, he knows you were raised with the Whitaker moral code. He expects you to play the righteous savior."

"I do not save vipers," I replied coldly, my voice cutting through Richard’s pathetic whimpering over the speakers. "Richard chose his path when he handed me that gold pen in front of three hundred people and told me I was nothing more than an expensive placeholder until Sloane was ready to take my seat. Let the Directorate collect their interest."

"You misunderstand their game, daughter," Alistair said, his face hardening into granite. "They do not care about Richard. They are broadcasting his execution to establish jurisdiction. Under the maritime laws of the Conclave, if a debtor family is executed aboard an extraterritorial vessel without their creditor intervening, the entire estate—including the accounts you just seized in Level Seven—reverts automatically to the Tribunal under maritime salvage laws."

My eyes widened as the insidious genius of the trap clicked into place. If I ignored Richard’s death, the legal framework I had just weaponized would devour itself. The Directorate didn't need to defeat me in a financial duel; they simply needed to use Richard's corpse to invalidate the jurisdiction of the London courts.

"Then we board the ship," I said without hesitation.

"Eleanor, that ship is an armed fortress," Julian protested, placing himself between me and the blast doors. "It has fifty private mercenaries under sovereign contract. You don't walk onto a tribunal vessel without an army."

"She won't walk onto it as a petitioner," Alistair said quietly, pulling an ornate, iron-cast key from his waistcoat and tossing it onto the table. "She will walk onto it as the Bailiff of the Sovereign Charter. Because thirty years ago, I didn't just hide. I bought forty-nine percent of the company that built that ship."
