Chapter 118 - The Counter-Inheritance

New York was drowned in an unseasonal autumn sleet.

The city lights smeared against the wet asphalt of the private runway at Teterboro as our unmarked jet touched down in total darkness, its navigation strobes extinguished until we cleared the runway threshold.

Waiting by the hangar was a convoy of three armored Suburbans, their windows tinted opaque black, engines purring with low, heavy vibration.

A tall man with iron-gray hair and an immaculate charcoal wool coat stood waiting by the lead vehicle, holding a heavy black umbrella against the sleet.

Charles Montgomery. My father's personal legal counsel for forty years. The only man alive who had known Arthur Whitaker’s true intentions.

I stepped down the air stairs into the bitter cold, Helena following half a pace behind, her hand resting beneath the lapel of her tailored trench coat.

"Eleanor," Montgomery said, bowing his head with deep, profound respect. "Your father would be proud to see you standing here tonight."

"Is the board assembled, Charles?" I asked, bypassing pleasantries.

"They are waiting in the Grand Council Chamber on Level 80 of Whitaker Tower," Montgomery said, opening the door of the center Suburban for me. "Marian took control of the executive floor two hours ago. She has brought the remaining seven directors of the Eclipse with her. They believe you are arriving to sign the final conveyance."

"And the Vance assets?"

"Completely frozen by federal mandate," Montgomery smiled thinly as we climbed into the warm, leather interior. "Victoria Vance is currently being transported to the Metropolitan Detention Center. Sloane Avery attempted to board a chartered flight to Dubai at JFK forty minutes ago; she was intercepted by Homeland Security for currency smuggling. It turns out the silver gown she wore to your divorce announcement had three million dollars in bearer bonds sewn into the lining."

"Poetic justice," Helena muttered from the jump seat.

"Where is the master breaker, Charles?" I asked, looking out through the rain-streaked glass as the convoy accelerated toward the Lincoln Tunnel.

Montgomery reached into his breast pocket and produced an antique iron key, its surface engraved with the twin serpents of the original 1954 Whitaker covenant.

"Arthur hid the physical server offline beneath the ballroom floor," Montgomery said. "The very room where Julian staged his announcement. The Vance family thought they owned that building. They never realized Arthur purchased the ground lease beneath it through a perpetual trust in 1972. You don't just own the shares, Eleanor. You own the bedrock Manhattan sits upon."

"Marian thinks she holds all the cards because she controls the satellite feeds," I murmured, clutching the sapphire core in my gloved hand. "She doesn't realize that when you cut the roots of an empire, the branches die instantly."

"There is one more thing," Montgomery said, his tone turning heavy, almost hesitant.

I looked at him. "What is it, Charles?"

"Your mother didn't just come to reclaim the ledger, Eleanor," the old lawyer said quietly, his eyes dark with an unspoken sorrow. "She came because the Eclipse algorithm has a genetic flaw. It was built using Arthur’s biometric signature. Arthur is dead. Julian is dead. The only pulse left on earth that can authorize the transfer of the three hundred billion before the midnight deadline... is yours."

"She needs my heart beating," I said, a slow, cold realization washing over me.

May you like

"Yes," Montgomery nodded grimly. "She doesn't need your consent. She only needs your hand on the scanner before the final second of midnight. After that... she has no reason to keep you alive."
