Chapter 103 - The Ghost Protocol of 1929

Beneath the historic limestone crust of the city lay the forgotten military casemates—a labyrinth of vaulted galleries carved during the Spanish and Prussian occupations, modernly retrofitted by private Swiss banking cartels in the 1950s as nuclear fallout storage for gold reserves.
Julian leaned against a damp masonry wall, tearing a strip from his dress shirt to bind a deep laceration across his forearm. The silver cufflink bearing the Vance coat of arms caught the dim overhead emergency light—a gaudy reminder of the marriage that had ended in disgrace and deceit in that Manhattan ballroom.
"You knew, didn't you?" he said suddenly, his voice echoing hollowly off the stone arches. "When I handed you those papers on our anniversary... when Victoria stood there in her silver dress smiling like she owned the world... you already knew about the Tenth Ledger."
"I knew your mother was laundering Vance Capital debts through shell entities in the Cayman Islands," I replied, opening my portable console and plugging an air-gapped drive directly into the auxiliary junction box bolted to the cavern wall. "I knew Victoria was sleeping with you not out of desire, but because your mother offered her three percent of the Whitaker trust fund if she could coax the bearer shares out of your family safe. What I didn't know... was that your entire family was acting under orders from the Eclipse."
The green prompt on my screen blinked rapidly as the decryption sequence resumed. Lines of vintage financial code, compiled in long-dead assembly languages dating back to the Bretton Woods conference, cascaded down the monitor.
"The Tenth Ledger isn't currency, Julian," I said, turning the screen toward him. "Look at it."
Julian squinted at the shifting columns of numbers and sovereign signatures. His jaw dropped. "These aren't bank accounts. These are... collateral deeds."
"Every central bank reserve established after the Great Depression was backed by an unlisted tier of private gold bonds and land patents held by seven dynasties," I explained, my fingers flying across the mechanical keys. "The Whitaker family held forty percent of that backing. When your mother signed the dissolution order against me, she thought she was stripping me of my inheritance to save Vance Capital. In reality, the moment she severed my marriage to you, she dissolved the cross-collateralization covenants that kept the Eclipse consortium solvent."

A low rumble vibrated through the stone floor beneath our feet. Not an explosion, but the hum of heavy diesel generators spooling up deep within the tunnel network.
"They aren't trying to steal the money," Julian whispered in horror, the full scale of the catastrophe finally dawning on him. "They already have the money. They’re trying to erase the debt before the international markets open at dawn."
