Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Truth

The corridor seemed to tilt. The hit-and-run that had haunted Daniel’s nightmares for three years hadn’t been an accident. Claire hadn’t lost control on black ice.
She had been murdered.
“You’re lying,” Daniel rasped, though every instinct told him she was speaking the brutal truth.
“Check the safe in your own home, Daniel,” Julianna taunted, leaning back against the bench. “The one behind the library panel. The one you never opened because it was locked with Claire’s biometric fingerprint. Victor figured out the override code months ago. He’s probably there right now while you’re standing here playing the righteous father.”
Daniel spun around toward Marcus. “Marcus! The house! Who is stationed at the estate?”
“Two men on the perimeter,” Marcus replied, his face tightening as he grabbed his phone. “Calling them now.”
Marcus hit the direct line, putting it on speaker. The line rang three times, then connected. But instead of the security guard’s voice, a rattling, wheezing breath came through the speaker.
*“Daniel,”* the raspy voice wheezed. *“I see the wedding didn't go according to plan.”*
Daniel snatched the phone from Marcus’s hand. “Cole.”
*“You always were predictable, Daniel. So obsessed with duty. With family. You were so busy checking Julianna’s background that you left your personal sanctum completely unguarded.”*

“If you touch anything in that house, I will hunt you down myself,” Daniel snarled.
*“I don’t need to touch anything, Daniel. I already found what Claire stole from me. But more importantly… I found something else in her private correspondence. Something that concerns that precious little boy of yours.”*
