Chapter 31 - The Echo in the Cradle

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid ice. The cold of the river was nothing compared to the dread that seized his spine.

"What did you say?" Daniel grabbed Julian’s arm, his voice dropping into a desperate, ragged whisper.

"Arthur didn't hire her to ruin you," Julian said, his voice shaking as the adrenaline faded into sheer terror. "She wasn't pretending to be pregnant for the press. The prosthetic bump... the one that collapsed at the altar..."

Julian swallowed hard, looking toward the dark road that wound through the trees a hundred yards away.

"The doctors in Geneva didn't just take two babies, Daniel," Julian said, tears spilling over his frozen cheeks. "Claire was carrying triplets. The third one... the girl... Arthur gave her to the bride five days ago. The fake belly wasn't empty padding. It was a carrier unit."

Daniel felt the earth drop out from beneath him.

The church. The altar. The sickening moment the bride had collapsed, her silk dress tearing, the hollow metallic cradle exposed to the gasping crowd. Daniel had assumed it was a mockery, a grotesque stage prop designed to paint him as a madman who had impregnated a woman who was faking it.

It hadn't been an empty prop. It had been an incubator.

Suddenly, through the trees, headlights swept across the snow.

A long, black Mercedes-Maybach pulled silently to the shoulder of the rural road, its engine purring like a sleeping cat. The driver’s side door opened, and a woman stepped out into the falling snow.

She was wearing a long, blood-red cashmere coat over the torn, ruined remnants of a designer wedding dress.

In her arms, wrapped in a blanket bearing the golden crest of the Sterling family, was a crying infant.

The woman didn't run. She didn't draw a weapon. She stood under the pale glow of the streetlamp, looking directly into the darkness of the forest where Daniel, Leo, and Julian lay hidden in the snow.

Then, from the Maybach’s dashboard speakers, wired to an external bullhorn, a voice crackled through the frozen air—Arthur’s voice, broadcast from a live satellite uplink:

"Did you really think you could take my legacy, Daniel? Look upon your daughter. And decide if you have enough bullets left to save her."

A red laser sight cut through the falling snowflakes, snapping directly onto the crying baby’s forehead.
