Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Pew

As security moved toward the altar, a sudden commotion broke out near the rear of the cathedral. A man dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit abruptly stood up from the fifth row of the bride’s side, pulled his brimmed hat low, and shoved past an elderly couple toward the side vestry door.

Daniel’s instincts, honed from years of corporate warfare and unresolved grief, kicked in immediately. “Stop him!” he shouted, pointing toward the fleeing figure.

The security guards pivoted, but the crowded aisle hindered their progress. Guests stood up in panic, chairs clattered against stone, and Julianna used the diversion to lunge toward Leo, reaching for the phone in his hands.

“Give me that!” she hissed, her mask of gentleness completely peeling away to reveal naked desperation.

Before her fingernails could graze the boy, Daniel caught her wrist in a vice-like grip. He twisted her arm away with controlled, lethal precision, positioning his body entirely between her and his son.

“Touch him again, and you won’t make it to the police station in one piece,” Daniel said, his voice deadly quiet.

Julianna winced, crying out from the pressure on her wrist. “You’re making a mistake, Daniel! You have no idea who you’re dealing with! If you stop this wedding, everything you own will be liquidated before sunrise!”

“Let it burn,” Daniel replied coldly. He looked toward his head of security, Marcus, who had just managed to tackle the fleeing man near the vestry door. The man was pinned face-down on the red carpet, gasping for breath as his hat tumbled away.

Daniel didn’t recognize the man’s face, but when Marcus hauled him up, Daniel saw the earpiece tucked into the stranger’s ear. A small blue light was blinking rapidly—a live channel.

Daniel took Leo’s hand and walked down the steps of the altar, entirely ignoring the deflated bride who had collapsed onto the carpet, weeping tears of rage rather than sorrow.

“Dad,” Leo whispered, looking back at the woman who was supposed to become his stepmother. “The man in the recording… that wasn’t him. The man on the phone had a raspy voice. Like he was sick.”

Daniel paused, kneeling down to look his son in the eye. “How do you know that, Leo?”

“Because,” Leo said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small plastic thumb drive. “She didn’t just talk to him once. She left her laptop open last night. I downloaded the rest of the files.”
