Chapter 35 - The Genetic Seal

"She’s not just a pawn in a smear campaign, Daniel," Julian said, his voice heavy with dread.

Julian reached into his rucksack and pulled out the leather-bound ledger they had pulled from the Zurich vault—the volume bearing the Sterling crest and the sealed wax stamp of the Swiss Ministry of Health. He laid it flat on the wooden table under the amber glow of the lantern.

"Look at the serial numbers on her hospital bracelet," Julian instructed, pointing to the plastic band still secured around the infant’s tiny ankle.

Daniel stepped closer, leaning down. The band was stamped with code: *STL-03-TRP-C*.

"Triplets," Daniel murmured. "Claire was pregnant with three."

"Yes," Julian said grimly. "Leo was the first, born naturally before Arthur staged Claire’s supposed car accident. The second boy... the one we found in the cryogenic medical ward at Runway Four... he was taken surgically. And this girl was kept in an artificial gestation unit until she reached full development last week."

"Why?" Leo suddenly asked from the hearth. His young voice was laced with an innocence that made Daniel's heart ache. "Why would Grandfather make us in parts?"

Daniel walked over and dropped to one knee beside his son, placing a firm, reassuring hand on Leo's shoulder. "Because your grandfather doesn't view people as family, Leo. He views human beings as trust fund keys."

Julian nodded slowly. "Arthur’s grandfather established the Sterling Foundation under a strict patriarchal charter in 1948. Under the charter’s bylaws, Arthur cannot liquidate the core offshore holdings unless he produces three legitimate generational heirs of direct blood descent. If he fails to produce three living heirs before his seventy-fifth birthday, the entire estate defaults to an international charitable trust."

Daniel looked sharply at Julian. "Arthur turns seventy-five on Friday."

"In seventy-two hours," Julian confirmed. "He needed all three of your children recognized by the international courts. But he couldn't let you retain parental custody, because you would dissolve the empire the moment you had legal control. So he engineered the perfect paradox: register the children as wards of the Sterling trust, while framing you for aggravated treason, kidnapping, and murder."

"He doesn't want the children alive to love them," Evelyn whispered from the corner. "He wants them alive just long enough to execute the probate deed. Once the money clears the sovereign accounts in Singapore..."

She didn't need to finish the sentence. The automated laser sight on the Maybach had already delivered the punchline.
