Chapter 44 - The Cryogenic Cradle

The amber warning lights washed over the acrylic cylinder, casting long, wavering shadows across the tiled floor. Daniel approached the capsule slowly, his breath catching in his throat as the condensation on the exterior began to clear under the unit’s automated heaters.
Leo crept beside him, his scanner emitting a steady, rapid chirp. "The vitals are stable, Dad. Body temperature thirty-six degrees Celsius. Respiration cycle is beginning to elevate from baseline hypothermia."
Inside the tank, suspended in the fluid by delicate webbed harnesses, was a child. But it was not a newborn, nor was it the synthetic infant Arthur had fabricated to defraud the sovereign trust. The figure within the capsule was a girl of approximately eight years old, with pale skin, long dark hair that drifted weightlessly in the fluid, and features that struck Daniel with the force of a physical blow.
She possessed Claire’s high cheekbones, Claire’s delicate jawline, and most tellingly, an identical crescent birthmark just below her left collarbone—the exact genetic marker that had been verified in the Zurich archives.
"Claire had twins," Daniel whispered, his hand trembling as he pressed his palm against the frigid glass. "Leo... and a girl. That's what the records said. But this child... she isn't an infant. She isn't Leo's age either. How is this possible?"
"She wasn't born when Leo was," Leo said, his voice hushed as he jacked his portable drive into the base of the terminal. His young fingers danced across the keyboard, pulling the dormant logs from the mainframe's encrypted sectors. "Dad, look at the timeline. Arthur didn't just steal Claire’s embryos. Claire stole one back before she went into hiding. She used a cellular suspension protocol to keep the embryo preserved for years before gestating it in a private clinic in Zurich."
"Why?" the security commander asked, watching the monitor warily. "Why go to such lengths to hide a child down here?"

"Because of the charter's seventh clause," Daniel realized, his voice trembling with fury and revelation. "The sovereign trust required an unbroken line of three living descendants, each verified at specific developmental milestones, to permanently dissolve the Vance corporate monopoly. Claire knew Arthur would murder any child she kept by her side. She hid Leo in plain sight with me, knowing I would protect him... and she hid her daughter in the one place Arthur would never dare demolish: beneath his own throne."
