Chapter 55 - The Descent into the Trench

The elevator shaft descended straight into the belly of the sea.

As the hydraulic cage plummeted through the darkness, the howling of the surface wind gave way to the deep, groaning resonance of millions of tons of water pressing against the reinforced steel walls of the sub-aquatic structure. Every twenty meters, a fluorescent ring flickered to life, illuminating the descending lift before dying behind them.

"Depth: four hundred meters," Leo announced, consulting the wrist unit linked to the rig's internal sensors. "The environmental pressure outside this shaft is immense. If the purge protocol detonates the structural bulkheads, the entire facility will implode in less than three seconds."

"Look there," the magistrate pointed.

Through the reinforced acrylic windows of the elevator, they caught sight of the central chamber. It was vast, lit by a sickly aquatic green luminescence. Rows of towering cylindrical chambers lined the perimeter, submerged in circulating mineral baths. Most were shattered, their thick glass faces fractured outward, the fluid long drained into the grated drainage ditches below.

"Failed iterations," Daniel whispered, feeling a chill far deeper than the freezing air. "How many did they make?"

"Twenty-four prototypes over nine years," Leo read from the terminal, his hands shaking slightly as the lift came to a screeching halt at the lowest level. "They were trying to overcome organ degradation. Most of them didn't survive past forty-eight hours outside stasis."

The elevator doors ground open with a metallic shriek.

Before them stretched a long corridor lined with frosted blast doors. Overhead, an automated klaxon spun silently, casting rhythmic sweeps of amber light across the damp deck. A mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers, distorted by water damage:

*“Warning. Sovereign protocol active. Life-support bypass initiated. Ten minutes to cryo-thermal purge.”*
