Chapter 23 - The Terms of Blood

The click of the iron bolt settling into the oak double doors behind them sounded like a guillotine dropping.

"You can't kill us here, Arthur," Daniel said, deliberately stepping between Arthur’s gun and Leo. His pulse hammered in his ears, but his body remained utterly still. "Marcus knows I came here. The Swiss authorities have the telemetry from the private jet. The moment this estate goes silent, the entire Zurich cartel fractures. You’ll be a ghost without an empire."

Arthur chuckled, a low, rasping sound that rattled in his throat. "Marcus? Your loyal little corporate soldier? Marcus has been on my payroll since before you could read a balance sheet, Daniel. Who do you think handed the forged medical files to the bride’s lawyers? Who do you think orchestrated the media leak at the cathedral?"

The revelation hit Daniel like a physical blow. Marcus. The man who had managed the Sterling security apparatus for twenty years, the man who had handed Daniel the keys to the armored sedan only hours ago at the fog-covered airstrip.

"He's lying, Dad," Leo whispered, his small fingers digging into Daniel’s coat. "The man with the scar always lies. The woman in the white coat told him that."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced down at Leo. A flicker of cold annoyance crossed his features. "The child speaks too much. Eleanor, take him."

"Don't touch him," Daniel snarled, reaching inside his trench coat.

Before his fingers could find the grip of the concealed Glock, two armed men in dark tactical gear stepped from behind the heavy velvet drapes flanking the fireplace, MP5 submachine guns raised, their red laser sights snapping instantly onto Daniel’s chest.

"I wouldn't," Arthur cautioned, not even bothering to raise his own pistol higher. "Julian, retrieve the ledger from your brother."

Julian hesitated. For the first time since Daniel had entered the vast hall, the boy’s blank facade cracked. His grey eyes—the exact shade of Leo’s—darted toward Daniel, then to Leo, and finally down at his own wrist, where the thin silver hospital bracelet gleamed under the chandelier.

"Julian," Arthur’s voice dropped, laced with venomous authority. "Obey."

Julian took a slow, deliberate step toward Leo. His hands were open, his fingers trembling almost imperceptibly.

"Julian, stop," Daniel commanded, keeping his voice calm, firm, and paternal. He did not look at the armed guards or the red dots dancing on his chest. He looked straight into the identical child’s eyes. "You don't belong to him. You are my family."

"He doesn't know what family means, Daniel," Eleanor mocked, leaning back with her fingers interlaced over her lap. "He was educated in isolation. He speaks six languages, can execute tactical breaches, and doesn't possess the capacity to love. You cannot appeal to an empty vessel."

Julian stopped three paces away. He looked up at Daniel, then down at Leo.

Leo slowly pulled his hand away from Daniel’s coat. Slowly, defying the red lasers painting the room, Leo raised his right arm, revealing the matching silver band around his wrist. The serial numbers were identical, save for the final digit: *001* and *002*.

"You're not a ghost," Leo whispered to the boy. "You're my brother. I remember the nursery. I remember the music box."

Julian’s breath hitched. A shudder ran through his small shoulders. His fingers curled into fists.

"Julian!" Arthur barked, his face darkening with rage. "Kill the sentiment. Take the child!"

Arthur stepped forward, raising his weapon toward Daniel’s head. But before Arthur’s finger could squeeze the trigger, Julian suddenly turned, his small body pivoting with horrifying speed, and slammed his shoulder directly into Arthur’s gun hand.
