Chapter 26 - The Redacted Truth

The tunnel widened after two hundred yards, opening into a vaulted chamber illuminated by low-voltage emergency strips. Rows of steel filing cabinets and server racks lined the damp walls, humming softly in the subterranean chill.
Daniel paused, scanning the perimeter with his weapon raised. The room was empty, but the monitors on the central console were active, cycling through green-tinted surveillance feeds of the chateau above. On one screen, Daniel saw armed men in full tactical gear sweeping through the grand hall, led by Arthur, who was barking orders into a satellite phone.
On the central desk lay an open metallic briefcase stamped with the insignia of the Geneva Bio-Tech Laboratories—the same facility where Claire had supposedly received fertility treatments eight years ago.
"Dad, look," Leo said, pointing at a framed photograph pinned to the corkboard above the terminal.
Daniel stepped closer, directing the flashlight beam at the paper. It was a medical birth registry, dated September 14, seven years prior. There were two footprints inked in black at the bottom. But above them, the names were clearly visible:
*Child A: Leonard Sterling. Mother: Claire Sterling. Father: Daniel Sterling.*
*Child B: Julian Sterling. Mother: Claire Sterling. Father: Daniel Sterling.*
Daniel froze. His breath hitched in his chest.
"Eleanor said..." Daniel muttered, his mind spinning. "She said Julian was Arthur’s son. Born to a surrogate."
"They told me that every day," Julian whispered, stepping up beside Daniel and looking at the document. "They told me the lady in the photograph died because she hated me. They said you threw me into the river because I wasn't strong."
Daniel dropped down to one knee, seizing the boy by both shoulders. "Claire never hated you. She loved you. She died trying to protect both of you!"
The realization hit Daniel with sickening force. Arthur hadn't manufactured Julian in a lab after his faked death. Claire had given birth to twins in Geneva. But Arthur, operating from the shadows before his staged demise, had stolen the second child directly from the delivery ward, forging the death certificate to convince Daniel and Claire that only Leo had survived.
Arthur hadn't created an heir; he had stolen Daniel’s own child, raising him as an assassin and a replacement puppet to reclaim the family fortune when the time was right.
"It was all a lie," Daniel whispered, rage burning through his grief. "Every word he ever spoke was poison."
Suddenly, the hum of the servers ceased. The green monitor screens flashed red, and a mechanical voice echoed from the overhead speakers:
*BUNKER PURGE SEQUENCE INITIATED. FLOODING SUB-LEVEL THREE IN SIXTY SECONDS.*

Arthur wasn't chasing them through the tunnels. He had activated the drainage turbines from the main house. He was going to drown them in the dark.
