Chapter 24 - The Spark in the Dark

The shot echoed like thunder through the vaulted hall, the heavy-caliber round tearing through the priceless oil painting of Arthur's grandfather hanging above the mantelpiece. Plaster and shredded canvas rained down in a gray cloud.
"Traitorous whelp!" Arthur roared, his hand recoiling from the sudden impact.
Daniel didn't hesitate. Survival instinct, honed over years of paranoia and military-grade security training, took over. He lunged forward, closing the distance between himself and the nearest guard in less than a second.
Daniel grabbed the barrel of the MP5, jerking it upward as a burst of suppressed fire shredded the timber rafters above. He slammed his forehead directly into the guard’s nose, feeling the cartilage shatter, then drove his knee into the man’s groin. As the guard folded with a muffled groan, Daniel stripped the submachine gun from his hands, spun, and fired a three-round burst into the second guard’s tactical vest, dropping him instantly to the floor.
"Move!" Daniel bellowed, reaching out with his left arm.
He caught Leo with one arm, hauling him against his chest, and his free hand grabbed the collar of Julian’s tailored wool coat. Julian didn't fight him; the boy’s eyes were wide with a terrifying mixture of shock and primal instinct.
"Eleanor! The blast doors!" Arthur shouted from the floor, scrambling to recover his fallen weapon.
Eleanor was already at the wall beside the fireplace, slamming her palm down onto an emergency lock terminal concealed behind an antique sconce.
A shrill siren pierced the air. Heavy steel plates began descending from the ceilings across the archways, cutting off the main corridors. The grand hall was transforming into a concrete tomb.
"The study!" Julian suddenly gasped, his voice higher, sharper, and distinctly child-like for the first time. "The bookshelf! There’s an extraction chute for the vault!"
Daniel looked down at Julian. The cold, mechanical doll was gone; beneath the conditioned veneer was a terrified seven-year-old boy fighting for his life.
"Show me!" Daniel shouted over the screaming alarms.
Bullets struck the floor behind them, splintering the aged parquet into shards as Arthur fired frantically from the ground. Daniel turned, firing a covering burst from the MP5 toward the mantelpiece, forcing Arthur to dive behind a heavy mahogany credenza.
Julian bolted toward the east corner of the room, his small legs moving with astonishing speed. Leo clutched Daniel’s neck, burying his face into his father's shoulder as Daniel sprinted after the boy.
Julian slammed his small fists against the fourth row of leather-bound books in the mahogany wall. A mechanical hiss echoed beneath the siren. A section of the wall swung backward, revealing a narrow, spiral stone staircase descending into pitch-black depths.
"Down! Both of you, down!" Daniel ordered, shoving Julian into the opening, then setting Leo on the steps just behind him.
Daniel turned back to the room. Arthur was on his feet, blood dripping from a cut on his scarred forehead, his gun raised.
"Daniel!" Arthur screamed, his voice warped with pure hatred. "You leave this house, and I burn everything you ever loved to ash! The company! The city! Everything!"
"You're already dead, Arthur," Daniel said coldly.

He reached into his pocket, pulled the heavy bronze statue of an eagle from the nearby side table, and jammed it brutally into the hydraulic hinge of the hidden door before stepping inside and kicking the release mechanism from within. The stone door slammed shut against the metal wedge, locking the Sterling patriarch on the other side.
