Chapter 42 - The Resonance Below

The tremor tore through the polished floorboards of the lakefront estate, rattling the heavy crystal chandeliers until they chimed like funeral bells. In the sudden hush that followed, Arthur’s ragged wheezing filled the grand chamber. The fallen patriarch crumpled against the edge of the mahogany table, his trembling fingers releasing the antique brass key. It struck the parquet with a hollow metallic clatter before rolling to a stop against the toe of Daniel’s boot.

"Dad, look at the frequency," Leo urged, his voice trembling beneath the synthetic whine of the handheld console. The ten-year-old thrust the glowing screen toward Daniel, his knuckles white. A rhythmic, pulsing green wave dominated the monitor, completely overriding the estate's standard security telemetry. "It’s not an echo. It’s a rhythmic pulse. Seventy-two beats per minute. Deep in the sub-basement, past the reinforced foundations."

Magistrate Vogel straightened her posture, her judicial calm returning with icy severity. She motioned to the armed bailiffs and the private security detail that had moments earlier abandoned Arthur’s orders. "Secure the elder Mr. Vance," she commanded, her voice cutting through the panic. "Call medical transport, but keep him under armed surveillance. Nobody leaves this estate until the full inventory of the sovereign trust is accounted for."

Daniel knelt and retrieved the brass key. It was unusually heavy, cold to the touch, and forged with five distinct grooves that no modern locksmith would produce. He looked down at Arthur, whose lips were stained with bloody foam, his pale eyes wild with a mixture of terror and malevolent triumph.

"You don't understand what she was hiding, Daniel," Arthur rasped, his voice barely a breath. "You thought Claire was an innocent victim in my game. She was playing her own board. If you open that vault, you won't just break the trust—you will burn this family's name from history."

"The only thing burning today is your empire, Arthur," Daniel said coldly.

He turned to Leo and knelt to his son's eye level. "Can you trace the conduit that feeds that sensor?"

Leo tapped rapidly on the glass interface, isolating a subterranean fiber line that had been hidden inside the manor's vintage water mains. "It leads through the wine cellar, behind the northern retaining wall. But Dad... the power reading down there is massive. Whatever is down there, it just woke up because Arthur's biometric link failed."

Daniel gripped the heavy brass key in his fist, signaling the commander of the security unit. "Take two men with non-lethal gear. Leo, stay close behind me. We’re finishing this."
